The Field

Nursing involves the care and counsel of the ill and injured, the maintenance of health, and the prevention of illness. Delhi's Nursing programs prepare graduates to become Licensed Practical Nurses or Registered Nurses.

In New York State, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) must practice under the supervision of a doctor or a Registered Nurse (RN). Registered Nurses may practice in a greater variety of settings and with more autonomy. Such care is dependent on knowledge of the liberal arts and biological, physical, and social sciences. Therefore, the Nursing programs require instruction in these disciplines.

The Instructional Program

The two-semester Practical Nursing program combines classroom instruction with on-site clinical experience. It's an energized approach that covers a broad range of basic skills and fosters a professional commitment to quality patient care. Clinical experiences at area hospitals and healthcare agencies provide opportunities for direct, holistic patient care. Graduates earn a certificate in Practical Nursing and are eligible to take the NCLEX Licensed Practical Nursing examination.

Career Options

Graduates of the Practical Nursing certificate program find employment in hospitals, nursing homes, day-care centers, infirmaries, physician's offices, private healthcare agencies, and home health agencies.

First Semester

Second Semester

Certificate Requirements: 36 credit hours, a grade of C+ (75) or better in each Nursing course, a grade of C (70) or better in all other required courses, and a Pass in all clinical courses.

Admissions Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent, with an unweighted high school average of at least 78% or GED score of 280 or better.
• Laboratory-based biology and Mathematics Course I with a minimum grade of 75 or better or 75 or better on Regents Exam. 
• High school chemistry and Mathematics Course II are strongly recommended.
• An on-campus interview is recommended.
• Each student must submit to the College Health Center a current immunization record (including Hepatitis B vaccine), the results of a physical examination, and the results of required lab testing.
• Professional Rescuer Certification in CPR (American Red Cross or American Heart Association Course C).
• Take the ASSET test (a college-wide test to determine placement for English and math).

Program Objectives

A graduate of the Practical Nursing certificate program should be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of data collection and nursing care concepts of the human system focusing on maternity, newborn, pediatric, aged, and mentally ill clients, with consideration of how cultural and ethnic diversity affects health care.
2. Understand and apply the principles and techniques used in assessing and meeting the basic physical and psychological needs of human systems through the lifespan, with primary foci on Activities of Daily Living (ADL), technical skills, and safety needs of clients.
3. Assist clients who have impaired body structure or function at various levels on the health/illness continuum. Emphasis is on the nursing process, therapeutic communication, critical thinking, and the health team’s role in providing for safety, comfort, health teaching, and rehabilitation.
4. Apply the skills of data collection, communication, and utilize fundamental techniques in caring for the geriatric population.
5. Use the nursing process in data collection and in utilizing care plans in implementing client care.
6. Display a thorough understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
7. Display knowledge of the fundamental concepts of psychology.
