The Instructional Program

This is a two-semester sequence of courses that starts in the fall each year. There are two options under this certificate program: one focuses on Carpentry, the other on Masonry. 

The courses in this certificate program are also in the Carpentry associate-degree programs. The certificate is good for those students who may not be able to attend college for longer than two semesters. Most students enroll directly in the Carpentry and Building Trades associate-degree program.

Carpentry Advisement Option

Carpentry Certificate Requirement: 32 credit hours

Masonry Advisement Option

The Masonry Option is available only to those students who have had prior carpentry experience, or who are interested in a single year of masonry-related instruction.

Program Objectives

A graduate of the Carpentry Advisement Option certificate program should be able to:

1. Understand and apply knowledge of safe construction practices.
2. Understand and interpret blueprints in the building trades.
3. Understand and apply the principles of building layout, footing and foundation construction, and the framing of floor, wall, and roof sections of residential construction.
4. Understand and apply the theory related to the exterior and interior finish of a residential structure, including stair design, layout, and construction.
5. Perform the common quantity take-off procedures for estimating residential construction materials using a computer spreadsheet. 
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the requirements essential to the establishment and operation of a small contracting business.
7. Recognize and respond to emergencies by making appropriate decisions regarding first-aid care.

A graduate of the Masonry Advisement Option certificate program should be able to:

1. Understand and apply the principles of construction theory as they relate to stone masonry, chimney and fireplaces, ornamental brickwork, and tile.
2. Understand and apply knowledge of safe construction practices.
3. Understand the theory and construction techniques for concrete flatwork and concrete block masonry.
4. Understand and apply the principles of building layout and footing and foundation construction.
5. Understand and interpret blueprints in the building trades.
6. Understand and apply the mathematics necessary for quantity take-off procedures for estimating concrete and concrete block materials.
7. Recognize and respond to emergencies by making appropriate decisions regarding first-aid care.
