SUNY Delhi is committed to providing students with the best opportunities to achieve academic success. Centrally located on campus, the Mildred and Louis Resnick Library and Learning Center is the College's "one-stop shop" that includes a wireless network, computer lab, and café in addition to a complete array of academic support services. This campus hub for research provides a modern mix of information resources, collaborative study and tutoring spaces, and an outstanding staff to assist students in their academic pursuits.
Library Facility and Technology
Within the Library, students work comfortably on state-of-the-art desktop and laptop computers to conduct research, work on papers, and study with friends. Three specialized rooms built since 2004 offer additional group study space on the upper level of the Library. The Resnick Family Reading Room is a comfortable, quiet room for studying or meeting with friends. The room features a student art exhibit and a portrait collage of the Resnick family. Nursing students appreciate the Olive B. Price Nursing and Health Care Special Collections Room, where they can find all of the Library's books on nursing and medicine in one location. The Merrill Family Foundation Special Collections Room provides a similar space for Veterinary Science Technology students; the room also features two desktop computers, specialized software, and a whiteboard to facilitate the peer mentoring program. Comfortable chairs, study tables, wireless laptops, multimedia units, and a breathtaking view of the valley complete both spaces.
Highlights of Library resources include: e-book collections (both free and subscribed) in reference topics, history, literature, business, and computing; Web-based databases with full-text articles from 40,000 different journals; over 300 professional journals and popular magazines for on-site browsing; specialized reference handbooks and statistical sources; course reserves; an academic and leisure book collection of over 50,000 volumes; a video and music CD collection; and state and federal document collections. Faculty, students, and staff may suggest purchases to enhance the collection by requesting titles using an online Purchase Request form. A networked color copier/printer and scanner are available whenever the Library is open.
Personal reference assistance is critical to the Library's service mission. Reference and research instruction are available most hours the Library is open. Librarians can also be contacted via the "Ask Us!" chat box on the Library's Web and Vancko Hall pages, by our AOL Instant Messenger buddy name (resnicklibrary), through our Vancko Hall forums, by e-mail (email@example.com), and by phone at 746-4644 to answer questions or to set up individual appointments. Librarians also teach course-specific and general workshops on research and information-gathering strategies in conjunction with academic program faculty. Cooperative lending agreements with hundreds of libraries and a 24-hour delivery system assure students timely access to materials not available at Delhi from libraries throughout the country. In addition, the SUNY Open Access program assures that a SUNY Delhi ID is accepted as a library card at all other SUNY libraries.
Online Research Tools
The Library is open 7 days, 77 hours a week for on-site usage. Extended access to research tools and services is available through the Library's website at http://www.delhi.edu/library and in Vancko Hall, the College's online learning system. From these sites, students and faculty can consult with a librarian, use online tutorials on how to use the Library's databases and how to use proper citation styles, search Delhi's Web-based library catalog, retrieve articles from research databases, search all SUNY library catalogs, and take advantage of the many internet research sites selected by Delhi librarians. 24/7 online research assistance is available to all Delhi students and faculty from the AskUs 24/7 reference cooperative. Librarians from around the country, including Delhi librarians, staff this virtual research desk, which is linked to the Resnick Library website and in Vancko Hall. Students with disabilities and ESL students may be approved for testing requiring extended time, a distraction-free environment, or other special testing needs.
Services for Students with Disabilities
Support services are available for students with documented physical and/or learning disabilities. The College is committed to providing reasonable accommodations necessary to remove barriers interfering with student success under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Support services include, but are not limited to: testing accommodations, adapted equipment/assistive technology, note-taking and reading services, interpreting services, accessibility information, referral and advocacy services, and accessible parking and elevators.
Tutoring is available in a wide range of subjects for students experiencing difficulty with their courses. Students may receive tutoring for two courses for two hours a week. The Writing and Math Centers provide specialized tutoring services by appointment or walk-in. All tutoring services include both peer and professional tutors. Faculty and staff also volunteer as tutors each semester.
English as a Second Language
Instruction for non-native speakers is available to students needing improvement in language proficiency. Instruction and support are provided through individual and group study as well as ESL courses offered in formal classroom settings. SUNY Delhi staff also volunteer to work with individual students.
Career, Transfer, and Veterans Services
The professionally trained staff in Delhi's Career Services Office assists students and alumni with career decision-making and planning, job searches, and the selection of upper-division colleges and universities for transfer to baccalaureate and master's degree programs. Specialized services include: online guidance programs and personal assistance with career/transfer planning; campus visits by corporate recruiters and employers, career fairs, as well as admissions representatives from four-year colleges and universities; information on internships; an online monthly jobs bulletin; seminars on topics such as résumé writing, interviewing skills, and part-time employment; access to nationwide electronic employment databases through the Internet; a low-cost résumé-production service; an annual graduate and transfer report on SUNY Delhi graduates; and help registering for veterans educational benefits. Services are available to students on an appointment or walk-in basis or online at the Career Services Web page.
The Academic Advising Office serves as a clearinghouse of academic information to students and staff, and as a source of referral to other support services. Staff is available to advise students on general academic requirements, procedures, and policies. Assistance using the campus e-mail system and registering on Banner Web is available. Current curriculum worksheets are also available for all academic majors. Refer to the Advising Office's Web page for additional information on the latest approved General Education courses as well as pointers on how to work with your advisor.
International Student Services
The International Student Advisor assists international students with immigration concerns regarding visa status, travel, on-campus employment, practical training, and transfer to other institutions. The office also administers the international student health insurance program and conducts a pre-orientation program for students who arrive early on campus.
Educational Opportunity Program
The EOP program is designed to assist students from New York State who are academically and financially disadvantaged. Applicants must meet academic and income guidelines established by New York State. Priority is given to students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. Students must apply prior to their entrance to the College. The main components of the program include tutoring, counseling, and financial-aid support. Those accepted to EOP must attend a three-day summer transition program that takes place right before the College-wide freshmen orientation program in the fall semester.
Non-Matriculated Student Services
Advising and registration services are available for all part-time students not enrolled in an academic degree program or enrolled at extension sites.
About the Resnicks
Originally dedicated in honor of Louis Resnick (Class of 1930) and his wife, Mildred, in 1988, the Library and Learning Center was re-dedicated in May 2003 following extensive renovation. Recognized civic leaders and philanthropists, the Resnicks received Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degrees from SUNY Delhi in 1996.
Computer Technology Center
The College's Technology Center in Sanford Hall features approximately 300 computers available 7 days a week during the hours most popular with students. Students have access to current hardware and software and PCs specifically engineered for their academic programs. Support staff are readily available to assist users. Network and Internet resources abound. Wireless notebook computers can be used here, too. The Tech Center also features "Cyberland," a facility dedicated to recreational computing.
