Natural Resource Recreation and Sports: Physical Education Studies - AS

The Instructional Program

The Physical Education Studies Associate in Science (AS) degree program at SUNY Delhi prepares students for either immediate post-graduation careers in sports- and recreation-related fields or for transfer to baccalaureate programs in physical education. The primary intent is to prepare students for transfer to baccalaureate programs in physical-education-related endeavors such as teaching, athletic training, exercise science, sports management, or coaching. The Physical Education Studies program is also closely linked to other NRRS programs, in particular the Adventure Recreation and the Recreation and Sports Management concentrations.

Delhi has a dual-admission articulation agreement with SUNY Cortland which guarantees that students who complete the A.S. degree in Physical Education Studies at Delhi with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 will be admitted into the Bachelor of Science in Education, Physical Education program at SUNY Cortland. The admissions requirements for this program are shown separately below.

In addition to the A.S. degree, the Physical Education Studies program affords students the opportunity to gain various certifications, such as American Red Cross certifications in First Aid and CPR, Lifeguard Training, and Water Safety Instruction. Students may also pursue additional certifications relative to other Natural Resource Recreation and Sports program concentrations, such as the New York State Coaching Certificate.

The core courses of the Associate in Science (AS) degree in Physical Education Studies emphasize theoretical and practical application of park, recreation, leisure, physical education, and natural-resource management. Small class sizes allow for considerable individual contact between instructors and students. This one-on-one, hands-on atmosphere is the cornerstone of the program.

SUNY General Education Requirements: Students who intend to receive A.A., A.S., or baccalaureate degrees must satisfy SUNY and campus General Education (GE) requirements to graduate. Students should be aware that GE requirements may vary by academic program. Consult with your academic advisor. For general information, see the "General Education" section of this catalog.

A.A.S. and A.O.S. degree students may not be required to fulfill General Education (GE) requirements; however, any student who may wish to transfer should complete as many GE courses as possible. Consult with your academic advisor.

Technical Standards:  In addition to academic requirements, all applicants must also be able to meet the minimum Technical Standards for the program, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Student Learning Outcomes

A graduate of the Physical Education Studies A.S. program should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the philosophy, history, scope, and significance of leisure profession.
  2. Identify the academic and career opportunities available in the leisure services profession, and have a working knowledge of how to access these opportunities.
  3. Illustrate application of critical thinking.
  4. Understand and apply fundamental concepts, principles, and procedures for the planning, development, and design of recreational programs, resources, areas, and facilities.
  5. Demonstrate proper safety, judgment, and decision making in regard to potential and actual emergencies.
  6. Understand and apply the principles of fitness in terms of cardiovascular endurance, proper weight control, and strength and flexibility through the design of individualized fitness programs.
  7. Demonstrate proficiency in the development and implementation of a complete lesson plan.
  8. Demonstrate a thorough grounding in the theory and application of several specific areas of the physical education discipline, including, but not limited to lifetime and team sports.
