Liberal Arts and Sciences: Early Childhood Education, Childhood Education, and Adolescence Education (Teacher Education Transfer) - AS

The Instructional Program

The Teacher Education Transfer options provide students with knowledge, skills, theory, and hands-on educational experiences that prepare them for transfer to four-year institutions with New York State teacher-certification authority in three areas: early childhood, childhood, and adolescence education. Early Childhood Education spans birth through grade 2; Childhood Education spans grades 1-6; and Adolescence Education spans grades 7-12. (Those with Childhood Education certification can also qualify to teach middle school by taking additional course work in a subject area specialty.)

Students in the Teacher Education Transfer programs begin fulfilling their liberal arts concentration requirements while taking courses in education theory and practice. Concentration areas offered at Delhi include the following: biology, chemistry, English, general science, history/social studies, mathematics, and physics. Each of the three Teacher Education Transfer options requires a minimum of 62 credit hours for graduation.

SUNY Delhi has collaborated with eight SUNY teacher education programs to permit seamless transfer from Delhi to these four-year institutions--in most instances, with junior status. Since SUNY's teacher education programs may alter admissions requirements and selectivity, students must carefully plan their teacher education program of study with an academic advisor.

Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must:

• be a high school graduate with a minimum 75% overall average or a minimum 2500 GED test score
• have 73% or higher on both the Algebra and the Biology Regents exams

High school course work and advisor interviews with prospective students form the basis for initial placement in writing, reading, and mathematics courses. Most students enter immediately into college-level courses, but those who are not prepared for college-level work are placed in developmental courses. Students who must take a full semester of developmental courses will not be considered for admission to a Teacher Education Transfer program until completion of that course work. Additionally, it is highly unlikely that such students will be able to complete program requirements in four semesters.

Upon entry to one of the Teacher Education Transfer programs, students should be prepared to take the following courses in their first semester: Freshman Composition or Advanced Composition by placement, EDUC 100 Foundations of Education and EDUC 101 Practicum in Education, Freshman Seminar, an appropriate college-level mathematics course by placement, and other courses appropriate to the SUNY General Education mandate.

Students are advised that most transfer schools require a minimum grade point average ranging from 2.5 to 3.0, as well as faculty recommendations specific to the Teacher Education Transfer program.

SUNY General Education Requirements:  

Students who intend to receive A.A., A.S., or baccalaureate degrees must satisfy SUNY and campus General Education (GE) requirements to graduate. Students should be aware that GE requirements may vary by academic program. See the requirements below for this program, and consult with your academic advisor.  For general information, see the "General Education" section of this catalog.

A.A.S. and A.O.S. degree students may not be required to fulfill General Education (GE) requirements; however, any student who may wish to transfer should complete as many GE courses as possible. Consult with your academic advisor.

Liberal Arts Concentration

In addition to the requirements below, each of the Teacher Education Transfer options requires a Liberal Arts Concentration comprised of 12-18 credit hours of course work. All New York State registered teacher education programs require completion of a liberal arts concentration. Students should determine their area of concentration early so they can begin fulfilling concentration requirements before transferring. These courses should be selected in consultation with a transfer counselor or academic advisor, and should reflect both the student's area of academic specialization and the transfer institution's requirements.

⁶ Students in the Adolescence Education program take 3-4 credits of laboratory science; students in the Early Childhood and Childhood Education programs take 6-8 credits of lab science, consisting of two different areas of science.

Additional Notes:

1. Students planning to transfer must work closely with a transfer counselor and an academic advisor. The degree requirements may be modified depending on the requirements of the specific transfer institution. Many transfer institutions also have specific overall grade point average requirements. Students should check with a transfer counselor or academic advisor.
2. Students planning to transfer to a four-year SUNY institution to complete their teacher education baccalaureate degree must complete the entire SUNY General Education requirement plus an additional three credits of foreign language.

A graduate of the A.S. degree program in Teacher Education Transfer Early Childhood Education and Childhood Education options:

A graduate of the A.S. degree program in Teacher Education Transfer Adolescent Education option:
