College Overview

Founded in 1913 and granted charter membership in the State University of New York in 1948, SUNY Delhi has earned a solid reputation for providing a student-centered, residential collegiate experience focused on academic excellence, innovation, and hands-on experience. Delhi has also carved a unique niche in higher education. Delhi offers a seamless technology-based education that includes over 50 academic programs leading to certificates, associate degrees, and specialized baccalaureate degrees. The U.S. News and World Report College Guide ranked SUNY Delhi among the leading colleges in the North for five consecutive years. That same publication reported that Delhi ranks among the top five in the nation with percent of four-year degree majors enrolling in graduate school within a year after graduating. Delhi also ranked in the top 10 of all SUNY campuses in 28 categories, including quality of instruction, according to the 2009 SUNY Student Opinion Survey.

Practical experience is the cornerstone of Delhi's academic programs. Bachelor degree programs include extensive internships. Technical programs feature extensive on-the-job experiences as well. It is a proven approach that gets results. More than 95 percent of Delhi students find jobs or continue their education within a year of graduating.

Over 3,400 students attend Delhi, and they represent a true cross section of the state's population. Nearly 25 percent of the student body comes from the Mid-Hudson region; about 22 percent comes from New York City and Long Island, with the remainder representing nearly every county in New York, neighboring states, and foreign countries such as Columbia, Japan and Vietnam. Students from under-represented groups make up 25 percent of Delhi's student body.

One of the fastest-growing segments of SUNY Delhi's student population is off site and online. More than 400 students are enrolled in Delhi's RN-to-BSN online program, which was the first of its type in New York State. SUNY Delhi also offers courses leading to select baccalaureate degrees on the campuses of Schenectady County Community College, Tompkins Cortland Community College, Onondaga Community College, and Suffolk County Community College.

As a residential college, Delhi is committed to providing programs and services designed to enhance the personal and cultural development of students. Approximately 65 percent of the student body lives in one of six on-campus residence halls. A new 120-bed, College-managed apartment complex is located adjacent to campus. Living-learning environments are available to Veterinary Science Technology majors. This highly sought living environment offers special services that contribute to student success. Distinguishing features include peer and faculty mentors, classes conducted in the residence halls, and the opportunity to form special relationships with classmates.

Delhi offers a full range of individual counseling, career planning and placement assistance, and disabled-student services. Special attention is given to outreach programs that offer workshops on contemporary health and lifestyle issues, résumé production, job interview techniques, and strategies for succeeding at college work.

Academic support for students is also available through the Resnick Learning Center. Students can receive instruction in writing, mathematics, study skills, and other areas through peer and professional tutoring.
