Degree Requirement: 64 credit hours
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Science program should have completed 4 units of high school English, 3 units of social studies, 3 units of college-preparatory math, and 2 units of laboratory science. Notes: 1 The particular laboratory sciences will be determined in consultation with a faculty advisor. A two-semester sequence in two of the three natural sciences (chemistry, biology, physics) is required: BIOLOGY: General Biology 1 & 2 OR Botany & Zoology OR Anatomy & Physiology 1 & 2 CHEMISTRY: Introductory Chemistry 1 & 2 OR General Chemistry 1 & 2 PHYSICS: General Physics 1 & 2 OR Physics 1 & 2 Students are required to successfully complete at least one laboratory course in that area of science in which a student does not complete a sequence. Two additional science electives are required, one of which must be a laboratory course. 2 Most of the unrestricted electives should be taken in additional mathematics and science courses. Where a special need exists, students may take up to 6 credits of technical electives outside the division. Additional Notes: 1. General Education Requirement: All students in the Science program must take at least one course from each of the five following general education subject areas: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Basic Communication. In addition, students must take at least one American History, Western Civilization, or Other World Civilizations course, and at least one Arts or Foreign Language course. 2. For this program, HONR (Honors) courses can be used to satisfy electives in English, literature, humanities, or social science. Program Objectives (Science) A graduate of the Math and Science A.S. program (Science option) should be able to: 1. Express him/herself effectively through written and oral communication. 2. Demonstrate a knowledge of and an appreciation for literature. 3. Demonstrate a solid grounding in science, with a specific emphasis in chemistry, the biological sciences, or physics. Between 24 and 28 credits of laboratory science credits are completed by the science major. 4. Display a fundamental understanding of the social sciences. 5. Discuss various areas within the humanities, based upon the two courses he/she has selected to take. 6. Demonstrate a solid foundation in mathematics based upon the 7 to 16 credit hours earned in this area. |
