Liberal Arts and Sciences Major
GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING A LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES MAJOR
AA and AS Degrees
The Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) degree options described below satisfy the State University of New York's General Education requirements and are designed to prepare students for successful transfer to four-year colleges and universities. When selecting a major, students should discuss their academic and career interests and options with an academic advisor.
Criminal Justice Studies
The Criminal Justice Studies AA degree program is the choice of students who would like to pursue further study at the baccalaureate level in criminal justice or related disciplines (criminology, sociology, and public administration). The program also prepares graduates for entry-level employment in the criminal justice field, courts, and corrections. Students planning to enter the workforce after graduation generally complete an internship.
The Environmental Studies AS degree program integrates rigorous training in the sciences with relevant social science courses, and is designed primarily for students who plan to seek a bachelor's degree in the environmental or biological sciences. SUNY Delhi's location in New York City's Catskill Watershed provides students with a unique instructional setting and the opportunity for significant hands-on experience.
The General Studies AA and AS degree options offer flexible programs of study, allowing students to explore many academic fields. Students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university, but remain unclear as to their intended major, should choose one of the General Studies options. The AA degree broadly serves students with interests in literature, the humanities, and the social sciences, while the AS degree serves students whose interests lean more toward the natural sciences and/or mathematics.
Humanities and Social Sciences
These AA degree programs are more focused than the General Studies options and are best for students who plan to seek bachelor's degrees in fields in the humanities or the social sciences. Students should select the Humanities Option if they contemplate careers in teaching or other professions requiring a firm foundation in English and literature, philosophy, foreign languages, art, and music; if their interests lie in history, psychology, sociology, political science, government, or economics, they should choose the Social Sciences Option.
This AS degree program is intended for students who plan to seek bachelor's degrees a science or science-related field such as environmental conservation, health care, or science education (Science Option). The requirements for this program are very focused and appropriate for students who are certain about their choice of a major in the sciences.
Teacher Education Transfer
The Teacher Education Transfer AS degree program is intended for students who plan to transfer to four-year institutions with New York State teacher-certification authority. Since transfer institutions may have differing requirements, students should plan their program of study with a transfer counselor and an academic advisor as early as possible, preferably before beginning their first semester at Delhi.
Undeclared Advisement Option (this option is not a degree major)
Students who are uncertain of their career and/or academic goals, or who were not initially admitted into one of Delhi's other academic programs may elect the Undeclared option. The Undeclared option is not a degree major; rather, it allows students to work closely with their academic advisors to identify their goals, sample Delhi's curricula, and prepare for a successful transfer to their major of choice. A student in the Undeclared option is required to select a major within one year or by the completion of 30-32 credit hours of course work.
