Students Go White Water Rafting

Do you enjoy outdoor adventures? Then the Adventure Recreation program is perfect for you. The first degree of its kind in the SUNY system, this program is designed to incorporate all of the programming skills necessary to develop and operate a challenging and inviting adventure program. Experience adventure activities while gaining leadership expertise. Courses are designed to provide you with a working encyclopedia of skills as you become an adventure educator. While earning your degree, you will complete the educational requirements to become certified as a Recreational Associate with the National Recreation and Park Association.

  • Construction and installation of low-ropes course elements for Margaretville Central School
  • Trail and construction projects at the SUNY Delhi Outdoor Education Center
  • Adirondack tea bench construction
  • Environmental restoration projects
  • Design and construction of a trail system for the proposed Catskill Water Discovery Center
  • Design and development of outdoor programming for the Delaware County ARC including: snowshoeing, maple sugaring, wilderness survival skills, aquatic ecology, hiking, and orienteering
  • Development and implementation of a community maple sugaring day at the Outdoor Education Center

 

 

What will I study?

From a weekend backpacking excursion to a high-ropes course, you will experience a wide variety of adventure activities firsthand. Courses include activities such as backpacking, camping, kayaking, white water rafting, snowshoeing, ski touring, rock climbing, more. Additionally, you will learn program planning, tourism, public speaking, and leadership skills. From these experiences you will develop a working encyclopedia of the tools necessary for success in the field.

This program also provides a summer internship opportunity in which students maintain and operate the SUNY Delhi Outdoor Education Center and work with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection in streamside restoration projects throughout the Catskills.
