October 26, 2009

Meeting called to order by Presider, Julee Miller

 Quorum established at 4:13 p.m.

 Senators Present: David Brower, Jack Burgess, Donna Dougherty, Cindy Elston, Terry Hamblin, Kim MacLeod, Clark Nelson, Kathleen Ogborn, Penny Pardoe, Thomas Philion, Tassha Rathbone, Angela Rhodes, Shannon Shoemaker, Jeff Stedman, John Taylor, Jack Tessier, Allen Wachter, Mary Wake, Linda Weinberg

 Absent: Glenda Bolton, Joan Erickson, Susan Greenwood

 Guest: D. Callas for C. Vancko

Budget: Govenor wants $90 million back by March; ideas: charge students $100 fee in the spring, tapping Business and Industry sources, CADI—shifting positions from state to CADI, DFR account usage

Farrell Hall/Construction: going well; may have an early summer move-in; Charrette discussions ongoing; class/lab utilization is above average—2% growth on campus per year—can add 200 more students on campus until we are too full to support them; possible new building for Nursing/VetSci in the future, housing will be an issue if the enrollment continues to grow.

Programming: Submitted an announcement for BT in Construction Management: Design and Building; working on an upcoming BBA in Business to mirror the one offered at SCCC

 The minutes from the 28 September 2009 meeting were approved with three abstentions.

• Discussion on local control of assessment for general education

Liberal Arts & Science

The proposal to change the unrestricted elective in the Nursing two-year program to a Liberal Arts & Science Elective was approved.

The proposal to change the admission and graduation requirement of Math 115 Statistics to Math 115 Statistics or ALHT 202 Research Methods for the BSN in Nursing was approved.

Liberal Arts & Science

The proposal to change the name of BIOL 110 from Environmental Issues to Environmental Issues and Sustainability was approved.

Common Hour

• Direct others from your functional areas to Confluence for more information and to discuss the idea of a Common Hour

Chancellor Awards

• B. Martin and B. Kaplan will be the clearinghouse for Chancellor Awards; common nomination form

• Discussion on how the chair is selected for Chancellor’s Committee for Student Excellence; Senate driven? Campus driven?

• Encourage colleagues to serve on these comittees


• How do online faculty get represented?
