President’s Report - Carl Weizalis – UFS President
- Planning continues for a March Symposium on Academic Integrity. Topics in clued plagiarism (professional & student), judicial issues, Academic Bill of Rights, retention
- Ongoing issues/concerns at Alfred State School of Ceramics. The Chancellor is quietly working with Alfred U. Board of Trustees and the Legislature on matters stemming from the forensic audit, UFS visitation, acceptable unit head job description
- Collaborative efforts are underway with UUP on common interests; Academic Bill of Rights, tenure, advocacy, SUNY budget, K-12 education
Programs & Awards Committee report
- presented formalized guidelines for Friend of the Senate Award, Senator Emeritus Award, Chugh Award for Outstanding Service to Faculty Governance
- presented resolution in support of restoring the $50,000 annual funding level for the Conversations in the Curriculum program
Governance Committee report
- presented survey for CGL’s and senators regarding individual campus practices for Evaluation of Administration
- presentation of resolution regarding appointment of interim campus presidents
Academic Programs & Policies Committee report
- presenting 2-day symposium on academic integrity 3/23 & 24/ 2006 Albany
- preparing an Internship Best Practices document
Technology Sector report
- faculty degree requirements for new programs are negatively impacting existing faculty
- BAP II weighted cost matrix for individual courses appears flexible, but there are concerns over how various weights are assigned and opportunity for appeal
- Need for more full-time teaching lines and academic space
- Long-standing salary inequities between Tech Sector faculty & other SUNY’s
- Alfred’s Senator thanked the UFS for its support for the School of Ceramics
Chancellor John Ryan report
- New mindset at SUNY Admin. “Serve the campuses!”
- SUNY needs $128 million more than Gov. Pataki proposes in his budget
- SUNY needs 300+ new faculty lines
- Enrollment is up, retention is improving, funding is lagging
- Support SUNY.org Chancellor Ryan distributed calendar cards with website for advocacy. He strongly urged faculty to lobby legislators through this site
- BAP II had broad-based input. It’s better, but not perfect. More work to do.
- Assessment efforts are proceeding well. He does not want BOT control.
- Ryan is proposing a rolling capital plan with more flexibility instead of the current 5 year model
Vice Chancellor Kim Cline Chief Financial Officer
- no campus will be worse off than last year
- SUNY needs $52 million to pay off residual “hold harmless” concerns, Pataki proposes $40 million
- “Empire Innovation Plan” for new research funding. research faculty = jobs
- EOP funding will at least be the same as least year. SUNY is looking for an increase
Provost Peter Salins – Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs
- Porvost Salins is leaving his position with Admin. & returning to the classroom at Stony Brook
- Report on Mission Review II & strengthened campus-based assessment progress
- Faculty Development Initiative Provost Salins has established a committee to develop a campus application strategy
