President’s Report
- Advocacy website to show support for the proposed 2006-2007 SUNY budget is www.supportsuny.org. Joel Smith will be sending out a message to the campus that these letters of support should not be sent from office desktop computers. They should come from your home computers.
- Barbara Sturdevant and John Nader are working on the final version of the college’s MOU. It will be sent to the Chancellor soon. This will be the college’s Five-Year Plan. When it is signed the Strategic Planning and Budget Group will reconvene.
- CADI hired a consultant to assess the campus store. They had some helpful recommendations including an increased emphasis on selling used textbooks, and a need to increase communication with faculty. Brian Huxley is chairing a textbook taskforce to ascertain how we can provide the best service for our students at the lowest possible price. One of the finds from the consultant was that in general our textbook prices are lower than the national average.
- Residence Life Task Force is looking at different ways to add more beds to our residence hall space. 30 beds will be added to the lower level of DuBois Hall next year. Also looking at new additional housing by working with the Dormitory Authority for building either a traditional dorm, or perhaps condos on the golf course, or using a private developer for other off campus housing. The task force is also focusing on how to renovate our current residence halls, with Russell Hall receiving the highest priority for renovation.
- Dr. Mary Pat Lewis will be sending the proposal to SUNY within the next two weeks for a web-based BS in Nursing degree.
- Cabinet is responding to a campus-wide need identified by the Budget and Planning Committee by temporarily reorganizing Ken Fass’ time to allow him to provide support for the new web site. This is a short-term solution.
- The restrooms on the second floor of Kunsela Hall will be renovated to guest-quality so that there will be restrooms on the same level as the restaurant in Alumni Hall. We are looking to fix up the area between Kunsela and Alumni with new furniture to make it an attractive area that will attract students. Some suggestions for use of this space were to make it a wireless access point, to use it for seminars, poetry readings or other evening events. Email any ideas or suggestions.
Annual Budget and Planning
- Chris Shields and Pat Heath, Co-Chairs of the Committee, distributed the Annual Budget and Planning Committee Report to the College Senate for 2006-07. A unit plan template is sent out in April and is due in June. The Committee reviews the unit plans over the summer and convenes in the fall, meeting with units to establish key points to present to the cabinet.
- Chris and Pat gave an overview of the major areas identified from the unit plans this year such as Technology and the Web, Budget Issues, Program Expansion and Enrollment Growth, Training and Need for Training, Communications, Maintenance, and Student Employment.
- They gave an Assessment Overview, a summary of Staffing Requests and Resource Requests. They answered questions and invited input as the committee will meet in March to work on the template for next year.
- This report will be posted on the web site as a link from the minutes: http://test.delhi.edu/academics/senate/BudgetandPlanningFeb2006.php
Academic Policies
Michael Branigan presented the following proposals:
- ADDITION to Academic Policy 1.385-D (Restablishing Matriculated Status Following Academic Dismissal), p 57. Proposed addition would read as follows:
- “D. The readmitted student shall be required to achieve a term GPA of at least 2.0 at the end of the first semester following re-matriculation to avoid being dismissed. In succeeding semesters, the student will be held to the dismissal guidelines for all other students (see section 1.384). The readmitted student will be placed on Academic Probation, and will be required to adhere to the requirements of the Probation Program (see section 1.384-1).”
- The last sentence being the addition. A motion was made and seconded to accept this addition. Voting showed all in favor.
- ADDITION to Academic Policies Handbook Section I (I. Academic Programs and Services Organization), Duties and Responsibilities of Academic Programs and Services Personnel AND Accompanying reference in Table of Contents. A motion was made and seconded to accept the addition of the word Technician as indicated in the various sections. Discussion followed as to the difference between the three categories of Instructional Support Associate, Technician, and Specialist. Marsha will research the differences. Voting passed with 1 opposed and 1 abstention.
- CHANGE to Academic Policy 1.35-1 H c (Withdrawal from Courses): change the date from the last day of the 13th week to Monday of the 14th week of classes. A motion was made and seconded to accept this change. Voting showed all in favor.
A motion was made and seconded to reopen a proposal tabled by the Senate at their November 28th meeting to allow students dismissed for academic reasons to enroll in an off-site internet class originating from SUNY Delhi. Once again there was a great deal of discussion concerning this proposal. A motion was made and seconded to accept the policy as amended with the phrase “off-site” removed. The motion passed with one abstention.
