ESL Services

In an effort to encourage academic progress and assimilation into the college community, the Resnick Learning Center offers several services for our English as a Second Language (ESL) students.  Services are housed in the Writing Center, Bush 225, and provided by the coordinator and professional tutors.

ESL Classes

Placement testing may indicate that an ESL student can benefit from a developmental English class to ensure academic success.  A four credit course, Eng 094, is offered in the fall semester to full-time and part-time students.  This course is designed to improve reading comprehension, build vocabulary, review grammar, and fine tune critical thinking skills.  Tools for academic excellence, such as note taking and time management, are emphasized.  Students will read and respond to short stories and non-fiction pieces.

ESL Tutoring

Individual assistance with writing papers on any subject is provided for ESL students in the Writing Center.  The center also assists in reading comprehension and conversational and pronunciation skills.  Moreover, ESL students may come to the center to work on papers or other class assignments.

Accommodated Testing for ESL Students

ESL students may need more time to read and consider material in English.  Therefore, accommodated testing is offered for major exams.  This takes the form of extended time defined as 11/2 the usual testing time (75 minutes for a 50 minute exam).

This service is given to ESL students who apply and demonstrate a need for extra time. Applications are available in the Writing Center from the coordinator who will interview the applicant and hand out an application for the instructor’s approval. On return of the signed application, a contract will be signed.  A student may sign up for accommodated testing in two subjects per semester for freshmen and one subject per semester for subsequent years.  To ensure the availability of a proctor and a testing seat, students must submit a signed application at least two days before the scheduled test.

ESL Community Connections

To practice conversation or to enjoy time away from the college environment, arrangements can be made to connect ESL students with members of both the college and wider Delhi community.

For questions on any of the services, contact Sharon Ruetenik, ESL and Writing Center Coordinator at 607 746-4196 or ruetensa@delhi.edu
