Bronco Weekly Update - Spring Sports
Athletes of the Week
Outdoor Track
The Bronco's traveled to Ithaca on Tuesday for a mid-week Invitational. The men had three national qualifiers, including Claude Davis with a first-place finish in discus (122-6) as well as shot put (37-8 1/2). The Bronco's also competed in the Penn Relays on Thursday and Friday. Chris Mason placed 25th in the Olympic Development Section of the 5,000, crossing in a personal-best 14:57.29. The men's 1,600 relay finished 6th with a time of 3:31.12. The relay included Josh Schultheis, Tony Modafferi, Rich Esposito and Alaric Best. The Bronco's traveled to Cornell on Sunday to compete in the Big Red Outdoor Invitational. Schultheis placed 2nd in the 800 to lead SUNY Delhi. Eric Stermer placed 3rd in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:58.73, which is the top-ranked time in the country for NJCAA D-III. Claude Davis improved his personal-best in discus by placing 10th with a throw of 128 feet, 2 inches. Davis has qualified for nationals in both discus and shot put. Gabby Dello was the only Delhi female to have a qualifying mark, placing 17th in the 800 in a personal-best 2:34.66.
Men's Golf
The Bronco's finished 3rd out of 10 teams in the NAIA Region IX and X Championships at the Apple Valley Golf Course in Howard, Ohio. Dustin Walbridge's fifth-place finish paced the Bronco's, who needed to win this tournament to qualify for nationals. He shot rounds of 74-73-78 for a 225-stroke total. Teammate Clint Cchaffee finished in a tie for 9th (227). Matt Schulte placed 14th (228) and Jim Hirsh was 16th (229).
Men's Tennis (0-10)
The Bronco's traveled to Cobleskill on Thursday and fell to the tigers 6-3. Kasey Carpentier and Josh Crawford won singles matches for Delhi. Crawford and Nick Benjamin also won a doubles match over the Tigers.
Men's Lacrosse (5-8)
The Men's Lacrosse team went 2-1 for their last week of regular season games. The Bronco's started off the week hosting a tough Mohawk Valley. The game was tied at the end of each quarter until Jeff Armer scored with 27.6 seconds remaining in the game to come out with a win 13-12. Armer finished with 4 goals for the Bronco's. Dan Hamlin scored 3 goals as teammate Matt Santer scored 2 goals for the Bronco's. Delhi hosted Cayuga CC on Friday and came out on top by a score of 16-9. Delhi faced a tough Jefferson CC on Sunday and fell 14-9. Nick Fitzgerald had 3 goals and an assist while Tim Mooney scored 2 goals for the Bronco's. Jeff Armer and Matt Santer each contributed a goal and an assist for Delhi.
Softball (2-16)
The Bronco's played their last home game of the season on Tuesday against a tough Tompkins Cortland. The Bronco's dropped both games to the Panthers (9-1, 13-5). The Bronco's traveled to Broome on Wednesday and dropped both games (9-1, 8-0). The Bronco's traveled to Cobleskill on Saturday and fell to the Tigers 14-6 and 7-0. The Bronco's traveled to Fulton Montgomery CC on Sunday and took the first game 13-9 behind sophomore pitcher Sara Schoch. The Bronco's dropped the second game 3-11.

This past weekend at the Cortland Classic, Josh ran the fastest time in the country this season in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:08.69. Josh is currently ranked #1 in the country in this event and will be taking that ranking into the National Meet on May 8-10 at SUNY Delhi. Josh is a Freshman from Seton Catholic HS, Binghamton , NY , and his major is Undeclared. |
Sara pitched 2 games against MVCC holding them to a 4-4 game until the 5th inning. She also pitched game 1 against Columbia Greene where she captured the first win of the season with a score of 10-0 in just 5 short innings. She also went 4-4 at the plate that game scoring twice. Sara is a sophomore from Hancock, NY, majoring in veterinary science. |
