Warnings

Do NOT open any e-mail attachments unless you:

• Know the sender. Don't accept e-mail "candy" from strangers.

• Confirm that the sender actually sent the attachment. Malicious messages may be disguised as coming from legitimate addresses. Do not open message attachments if you have any reason to suspect the authenticity of the message.

Workarounds

If you need to send and receive blocked file types, you may do so in several ways:

• Senders can rename the file before attaching it (Myfile.zip1); recipients may save a copy to their hard drive and rename it to its original value (MyFile.zip).
  • As long as the attachment does not end with the file type as listed in the table, the mail will be allowed to pass through.
  • Keep in mind that if the file extension is renamed to ".zip1", Windows will not how to open the file (rendering it useless and harmless) until the file is rename named back to ".zip".  Renaming the file does not alter the content whatsoever.
• Senders can post the file on a website (if appropriate) and tell recipients where they can download it.
• Senders can attach one file and name it: sunydelhicollege.zip  (The name must be an exact match.)
   

C urrently, a safe alternative for sending encrypted zip files is to use IZArc, which creates encrypted zips with the attachment type of .ize.
