Why are some attachments blocked?

Why are some e-mail attachments blocked?

Some viruses, Trojan Horses, and other malware are spread by "unsafe" attachments to e-mail. Several viruses have spread throughout our campus due primarily to computer users being tricked into opening the attachments and unleashing malicious payloads. By stripping away harmful attachments, email messages will arrive in your mailbox, but they will not do further damage.

 

Please note :  Common attachment types such as those used by MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Adobe, are NOT affected by this process.
