Troubleshooting Install


I’ve got everything installed right but it is still not connecting. What’s going on?


Is TCP/IP is set to Obtain an IP address automatically?
 1. Right click My Network Places, click on properties.
 2. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on properties
 3. Right click on wireless connection click on properties, click next to Obtain an IP address automatically, and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
 4. Click OK

Is MAC bridging is disabled?
 1. Right click My Network Places, click on properties.
 2. Right click on the MAC Bridge and click disable
 3. Right click on the wireless connection and click on Remove from bridge.
 4. Click OK
 5. Reboot your system

Is Internet Connection Sharing is disabled?
 1. Right click My Network Places, click on properties.
 2. Right click on Wireless Network Connection and click properties
 3. Click on the Advanced tab and make sure there is no check mark in the box labeled "Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection."

Make sure that proxy settings are correct:
 1. Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools and Internet Options
 2. Click on Connections, click on LAN Settings, put a check in the box labeled Automatically detect settings.
 3. Click OK, click OK in internet options and try to reconnect.

My machine is trying to go to a dial up connection. What do I do?
 1. Open Internet Explorer click on Tools and Internet Options
 2. Click on Connections, select Never dial a connection.
 3. Click Apply, Click OK

Internet Explorer isn’t set up for a LAN connection on my computer, what should I do?
 1. Open Internet Explorer click on Tools and Internet Options
 2. Click on Connections
 3. Click Setup
 4. Click on Connect to the Internet and click NEXT
 5. Click on Set up my connection manually and click NEXT
 6. Click Connect using a broadband connection that is always on and click NEXT
 7. Click Finish

I was working in the library and had no problem connecting with my laptop, now I’m in my dorm room and I can’t connect.
 1. Click start go up to run and click on it
 2. In the run box type "cmd" and click OK
 3. In the command window type "ipconfig/release" and hit the enter key
 4. Close all windows and reboot your machine.

How do I check for my IP address or release and renew my IP address?
To find IP address:
windows XP/2000
1. Click on Start / Run
2. In the box provided type the command cmd and click on
OK
3. Type the command ipconfig /all in the new window, you should see values similar to the ones shown below:
Windows 98/ME
1. Click on Start / Run and type in
winipcfg

To release and renew IP address:
Windows XP/2000
1. Click on Start / Run
2. In the box provided type the command cmd and click on
OK
3. Type the command
ipconfig /release
4. Type the command ipconfig /renew
Windows 98/ME
1. Click on Start / Run and type in
winipcfg
2. Click on the renew button

Things to keep in mind:

Do you or any of your neighbor’s own 2.4GHz phones? 2.4GHz phones operate in the same spectrum as ResNet and are banned in the residence halls.

Are you using an unsupported wireless device?  Some wireless adapters don’t work well on our particular network.

Do you have spy ware on your machine? Spy ware can hinder you from getting connected at all.  You should run a third party anti spy ware program like SpyBot Search & Destroy or Ad-aware SE Personal Edition frequently. Both may be downloaded from
DOWNLOAD.COM.  Just like anti-virus software, run the update option immediately after installing and on a regular basis to make sure us have the latest detection files.

Disable NetBIOS:
For an added layer of security disable NetBios on your machine.

1. Open network Connections
2. Right Click on Local Area Connection
3. Go to Properties and click
4. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
5. Click on Properties button
6. Click on Advanced button
7. Click on WINS Tab
8. Under NetBIOS setting choose Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
