Wireless Internet Access in the Residence Halls

All residence hall rooms have wireless networking providing Internet access 24/7. No cables are necessary, and no dialup or ISP is required – it doesn’t tie up the phone line. The wireless network is a web of access points each transmitting a radio signal that carries the Internet to student computers. Students can surf the net, research academic projects, send and receive email, etc.  Access points have been strategically placed throughout the halls to allow for the complete and maximum coverage in order to insure a constant and steady connection, even when moving between rooms.

All a student needs to connect to the Internet via ResNet is a computer (see minimum requirements below) and an IEEE 802.11b/g compliant wireless network adapter.

Notebook computers use a built in device or a PCMCIA wireless network card. Desktop computers use an external USB wireless adapter.

Minimum Computer Requirements are...

It is recommended that any PC or notebook should be running a fully functioning version of Windows XP/VISTA (Home or Pro),  for their operating system. We strongly discourage Windows ME or Windows 98 sp1. Connectivity for 802.11 b/g capable Macintosh computers is available on Delhi's ResNet wireless network. Please be advised, however, that service support (diagnosis and repairs) for Macintosh computers on campus is limited. Suggested hardware requirements; Pentium IV processor running at 2 GHz or higher, with 512 MB RAM. Notebooks must have a built in adapter or an open PCMCIA card slot and desktop computers must have a USB connection available. It is important for students to bring their copy of the operating system software and other system disks for their computer to campus.

It is required that all computers connecting to ResNet have "Current - Up to Date" Antivirus Software installed. See Antivirus Information for more information. A few antivirus software vendors are found below:  Residents can also pick up a ResNet CD at the ResNet office, 143 Gerry Hall.

McAffee
Trend Micro

Symantec

Sophist - PC

AVG
(which has a free product)

We recommend that prior to arriving at Delhi you take the following steps:

1)  Check to see when your antivirus software subscription ends. If it ends soon - renew your subscription.
2)  Update your antivirus software to the latest pattern.
3)  Virus scan your computer to insure that you do not have a virus on your computer.
4)  Perform a
Microsoft Windows Update to install the latest critical security patches on your computer.

Delhi College reserves the right to disconnect computers from the campus network if they are found to be infected with a computer virus.

 Assistance Connecting to ResNet

Additional help will be available throughout the semester at the ResNet office, 143 Gerry Hall.

Reminder –
That all 2.4GHZ cordless telephones and other devices interfere with the wireless signal, so they are banned within the residence halls.
