Major Essay Assignment Description
"The Giver" by Lois Lowry is a story, seen through the eyes of the young boy Jonas that tells of a society in which everything seems ideal. Everyone has a job for which he or she is suited emotionally, physically, and mentally. Both the young and the old are cared for and given special attention. Each family has a mother, father, daughter, and son. There is no disease, crime, or any of the common problems we deal with in our current society.
For this assignment, pick 2 social issues prevalent in our current society or of interest to you other than Abortion, Birth Control, the Death Penalty, or Teen Pregnancy. (Possible issues could include Day Care, Gun Control, Surrogate Mothers, Overpopulation, Homelessness, State Assisted Welfare, Euthanasia, Drug Use, Crime, Gangs, etc.) Write an essay comparing the methods our society uses to deal with these issues with the methods the society represented in "The Giver" might use to deal with them. In your comparison, indicate clearly to me how you feel these issues could/should be best dealt with. You may cite personal experiences as well as examples directly from "The Giver."
The essay should be 2-3 typed pages, double-spaced, with the standard 1 inch side margins, and font size no larger than 12 point. This essay will be due at the beginning of class on Friday, October 1.
