New Director of Professional Golf Management Named

DELHI, NY … SUNY Delhi has announced that Thomas A. Philion has been named the college’s new director of professional golf management.

An award-winning PGA professional, Philion will serve as the lead instructor of SUNY Delhi’s golf professional program, which is one of two academic concentrations offered by the college’s four-year degree in Golf Course Management.

Prior to joining SUNY Delhi, Philion managed the Columbia Golf & Country Club in Claverack, a private, 18-hole member-owned country club with 325 members playing approximately 18,000 rounds of golf annually. There he increased the club’s membership by 122 percent and implemented an improvement plan which included staff development and training, upgraded tournament procedures and policies, and enhanced merchandising. At Columbia, Philion averaged over 350 private lessons each year and offered clinics to players of all levels.

Philion is a Class A member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and the winner of the 1999 NENYPGA Horton Smith Award for dedication, leadership and outstanding contributions to the PGA Education Program. Philion holds a B.A. in Geography from SUNY Plattsburgh.

SUNY Delhi is one of only two colleges in the United States with a four-year degree in golf course management. The college’s 18-hole golf course serves as an academic laboratory, and its clubhouse features a full-service restaurant.
