SUNY Delhi Students Honored by Chancellor

DELHI, NY … Two SUNY Delhi students will be honored by State University of New York Chancellor John Ryan for exceptional achievement.

Meghan Holley, a Veterinary Science Technology major from Walton, and Teresa Angell, a nursing major from West Davenport, are a part of an elite group of students who will be presented with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany on April 10.

“We are thrilled that Chancellor Ryan is recognizing these two Delhi students,” said SUNY Delhi President Candace Vancko. “They represent the highest level of achievement throughout the SUNY system.”

Meghan Holley is a recipient of the SUNY Delhi Presidential Scholarship which recognizes outstanding students from Delaware and Otsego Counties with the equivalent of full tuition. Maintaining a 3.9 G.P.A in her major, she has served as an intern with Valley Veterinary Associates in Sidney and has volunteered her time to assist the Westbrook Veterinary Clinic in Walton and Dr. Chris Camann, an area large animal veterinarian based in Unadilla.

Holley is currently secretary to her college’s chapter of the New York State Association of Veterinary Technicians (NYSVAT), a student club that has been recognized as a Presidents Outstanding Community Service Student Organization for the past two years. She has assisted many community service projects through her NYSVAT chapter by developing and implementing animal care programs for local 4-H clubs and participating in the Puppies and Kittens program, which is sponsored by the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society. Holley also participated in painting fire hydrants for the Village of Delhi as part of a SUNY Delhi leadership course.

Holley has received several athletic awards as an outstanding member of the Women’s Softball team at SUNY Delhi. In 2005, she received All Region Academic Athlete, All American Academic Athlete, All Distinguished Academic Athlete, and Female Academic Athlete. In addition to her academic-athletic honors, she is a recipient of a College Association at Delhi, Inc. scholarship and is a member of the national honor society of two-year colleges, Phi Theta Kappa.

Teresa Angell is a SUNY Delhi student who is committed to helping others. A recipient of the O’Connor Nursing Scholarship, she is a regular volunteer with the Catskill Regional AIDS Alliance (CRAS), giving community workshops and making presentations to help educate others on HIV/AIDS. Most recently she spoke to nursing classes at Hartwick College and served as a guest speaker for the CRAS World AIDS Day. Angell also participates in missionary work locally and internationally, traveling as far as Bosnia and South Africa to help those who are less fortunate.

Angell maintains a 3.9 G.P.A. and earns academic honors consistently as a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She received the college’s “Outstanding Performance in All Areas of Clinical Nursing” award in 2005 and, according to her instructors, “demonstrates exceptional nursing care and expertise…and exhibits the utmost compassion and empathy with her peers and her patients.”

A mother of two, Angell finds the time to assist the college’s Resnick Library and Learning Center as a peer tutor, helping her fellow students form good study habits. She has used her artistic talents to complete a September 11th memorial mural at the Davenport Firehouse and has painted other murals at pediatric centers and a church.
