SUNY DELHI NAMES PRESIDENTIAL HONORS SCHOLARS

July 31 , 2007 , Delhi, N.Y. … Eleven of the area’s leading high school graduates have been named Presidential Scholars at SUNY Delhi by President Candace S. Vancko. These select graduates will be admitted this fall into the college’s honors program, which is designed to recognize, reward and inspire the best and the brightest local students, and help them receive their degree close to home. Each scholar will receive a full-tuition scholarship by attending SUNY Delhi.

“This year represents the largest group of Presidential Scholars to be accepted at SUNY Delhi since beginning the program,” said President Vancko. “It’s no surprise SUNY Delhi is in demand. With an application rate increasing at nearly double that of SUNY and with programs reaching their target enrollments earlier than ever, students and parents clearly recognize the value of the SUNY Delhi experience.”

This year’s Presidential Scholars have a cumulative average of 92.13 They are: Annabel Kugler, a Liberal Arts major from Schenevus; Michael Casta, a Web Development major from Hancock; Amanda Moffett, a Physical Education major from Walton; Jared Boice, a Culinary Arts major from Walton; Valerie Outsen, a Culinary Arts major from Delhi; Robyn Murphy, a Veterinary Science Technology major from Walton; Paul Santobuono, Jr., a Plumbing and Heating major from Franklin; Joseph Wilson, a Veterinary Science Technology major from East Meredith; Courtney Hoyt, a Veterinary Science Technology major from DeLancey; Amanda Gutliph, a Veterinary Science Technology major from DeLancey; and Gabriele Dello, a Liberal Arts major from Gilbertsville.

SUNY Delhi solicited nominations for the Presidential Scholars Program from area high school superintendents within Delaware and Otsego Counties. They made their recommendations based on the criteria set for the program.

Eligible students must rank within the top 15 percent of their graduating class, earn a Regents Diploma with a minimum average of 88 percent, and are required to submit a 350 to 500 word essay highlighting their extracurricular activities and achievements. Presidential Scholars must maintain a G.P.A. of 3.3 while attending SUNY Delhi to continue their scholarship status.

SUNY Delhi’s honors program is designed for students who seek a greater academic challenge given their ability and personal motivation. Qualified students are challenged through specially designed honors courses in the humanities and social sciences, as well as through courses in their major.
