SUNY DELHI PARTNERS WITH IBEW TO OFFER ELECTRICAL CONSTRUCTION DEGREE

December 21 , 2007 , Delhi, N.Y. … SUNY Delhi and IBEW Local 236, the Tri-City Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee of Latham, NY, have partnered to offer an associate degree in Electrical Construction and Instrumentation to journeymen electricians.

Recognizing the five-year electrical apprenticeship is equal to what is taught in the traditional college setting, the partnership between SUNY Delhi and IBEW makes it possible for a journeyman electrician to obtain an associate degree, thereby opening up future employment possibilities.

According to Dr. David Addison, dean of technology at SUNY Delhi, the new degree has the potential of attracting students nationally. “The five-year electrical apprenticeship is offered throughout the country, and since we are offering courses in an online-hybrid format, we expect to attract journeymen electricians from across the nation. This new degree is an example of how the resources of SUNY can be linked to the workforce needs of business and industry in New York State and beyond.”

Journeymen electricians who complete a five-year IBEW apprenticeship consisting of formal classroom studies and hands-on employment as union electricians, and four three-credit courses through SUNY Delhi, will receive an associate degree in Electrical Construction and Instrumentation from the college.

Electricians who are eligible to enroll in this degree program are those who have completed the IBEW five-year apprenticeship program, as well as individuals who are currently enrolled in and have completed a minimum of two years of an IBEW five-year apprenticeship program.

SUNY Delhi will evaluate each enrollee’s classroom, field work and final exam records to determine what challenge credits can be applied towards the associate degree.  Once accepted, students complete 12 credits (four courses) online, or in an online-hybrid format, through SUNY Delhi.

SUNY Delhi is a member of the State University of New York, the largest public higher education system in the U.S. Delhi’s seamless approach to education includes over 40 academic programs, and allows students to obtain one-year certificates and two-year associate degrees. Students may also pursue a four-year degree in select programs at Delhi. For more information about SUNY Delhi, call toll-free 1-800-96-DELHI or visit Delhi’s web site at www.delhi.edu.
