SUNY DELHI ANNOUNCES FIRST FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR

April 09 , 2009 , Delhi, N.Y. … Dr. Linnea Goodwin Burwood, associate professor of history at SUNY Delhi, has been named a Fulbright Scholar for 2009-10, marking the first time a Delhi faculty member has earned this prestigious international honor.

Dr. Burwood will travel throughout Russia next year conducting research on the Russian Revolution to develop an illustrated monograph, which will provide a comparative analysis of one of the train trips taken to gather historical documents during the Russian Civil War period in 1921. The study will demonstrate pictorially and through narrative the nearly a century of change in the region. Her studies will include researching documents stored for the Russian Revolution Museum, a project that was not brought to fruition by the Soviet government. These documents have not previously been examined for their historical content.

"This is a tremendous honor for Dr. Burwood and brings national prominence to SUNY Delhi," says President Candace S. Vancko. "The Fulbright Program is among the most highly respected and competitive awards in higher education," says President Vancko. "Dr. Burwood's selection recognizes her outstanding scholarship and will provide an important piece of an underexposed part of Russian history to Russia and the international community."

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." Since its inception more than 60 years ago, the Fulbright Program has provided almost 300,000 participants-chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential - with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. In that regard, Fulbright Scholars are considered international ambassadors for the United States.

Dr. Burwood's project will build on her previous research dealing with anarchy and the Russian-American anarchist Alexander Berkman. She is currently working on a Berkman biography and expects to secure a publisher by this fall. "Her research will bring a new dimension of scholarly exploration to the Delhi classroom and will benefit students and educators for years to come," President Vancko says.

Dr. Burwood had demonstrated outstanding leadership and service during her distinguished eight-year career at SUNY Delhi. She co-chaired the college's Budget and Planning Committee for the last two years. She was a member of the General Education team which developed a campus plan for meeting a SUNY-mandated initiative regarding student outcomes assessment. Dr. Burwood serves on the College Retention Committee, the Academic Advising Committee and as a member of the College Senate, SUNY Delhi's campus governance organization.

She holds an associate's degree from Broome Community College and bachelor's, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Binghamton University.
