COMPUTER INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS
ENROLLED IN SUNY DELHI INTERNET COURSES

Internet Requirements
Since many instructors use extensive graphical and interactive web presentations in their online courses, SUNY Delhi requires that students enrolled in Internet courses have broadband Internet access. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) should provide any necessary software and directions along with a technical support to help you get connected and to resolve problems you may have later.

Internet Explorer 7 is now available from Microsoft, however we are encouraging all Delhi users NOT to update at this time. Based on preliminary testing several conflicts have been identified with Delhi WebMail and other online student services.. Please be aware that CIS and the CIS Help Desk will only be able to offer limited support if you choose to upgrade at this time. We recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 through 6.9. For those in Vancko Hall, we recommend Mozilla Firefox (free download)

Remember to test your computer and Internet connection well in advance of the start of the term to ensure that the connection is working properly.

If your course is in Vancko Hall, please see Vancko Hall technical recommendations.

Computer Requirements
It is recommended that any PC or notebook should be running a fully functioning version of Windows XP/VISTA (Home or Pro), for their operating system. We strongly discourage Windows ME or the old Windows 98. On campus, connectivity for 802.11 b/g capable Macintosh computers is available on Delhi's ResNet wireless network. Please be advised, however, that service support (diagnosis and repairs) for Macintosh computers on campus is limited. Suggested hardware requirements; Pentium IV processor running at 2 GHz or higher, with 512 MB RAM. Notebooks must have a built in adapter or an open PCMCIA card slot and desktop computers must have a USB connection available. It is important for students to bring their copy of the operating system software and other system disks for their computer to campus.

Software Requirements
You will need to use a word processing application that supports RTF (rich text format).  RTF is a universal format for word processing documents. Microsoft Word, Works, WordPad (free with Windows), all support RTF. Use the help function of your word processing software to learn how to create RTF documents.  Some courses may require the use of additional software programs and computer hardware products to complete course requirements. Be sure to check the course description for additional computer requirements before you enroll.

Your Computer’s Health
Spyware is the #1 source of all access problems reported.  Spyware is present on nearly everyone’s computer in some form and may have been installed without your knowledge.  Use tools like Ad-Aware SE and Spybot – Search & Destroy to clean your system weekly.

Blocking popups while using WebCT or Vancko Hall will interfere with your ability to access your course work.  Disable all popup blockers while using WebCT and Vancko Hall or if you know how, add https://webct.delhi.edu  and http://vanckohall.delhi.edu to your list of sites not to block.  Windows XP Service Pack 2 contains a popup blocker as well as third-party software like the Google ToolBar, Norton 360 and CA Security Center. All of these have been found to prevent students from opening quizzes.

Microsoft Windows users should visit the Windows Update site at least once a month to install all critical security updates. Don’t risk sending infected assignments to WebCT or Vancko Hall. Our network will reject files found to contain viruses.   We recommend PC-cillin Internet Security software from www.trendmicro.com, or a free package: AVG Anti-Virus from Grisoft. AVG, while not as robust as software you pay for, is many times better than having no protection. It is available at http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php.
