ContentPeer Education ProgramsCounseling Services, with the assistance of Health Services, maintains an active Peer Education program. In addition to Counseling and Health Services staff, peer educators are used to provide outreach programs to the college. Peer educators have the advantage of being at a similar point in their lives and having many of the same experiences as the other students on campus which enhances their credibility, making it easier for them to reach their fellow students with the educational information. Peer educators provide outreach programs on a number of topics including safe sex practices and sexually-transmitted diseases, diversity issues, alcohol and other drugs, sexual harassment, and prevention of sexual assault and domestic violence. Peer educators are recruited during the fall semester and are required to take Theory and Practice in Peer Education in the spring semester. This is a 3 credit course taught by Counseling and Health Services staff. In this course, students are taught the fundamentals of peer education including the role and responsibilities of a peer educator and strategies for developing, marketing, and presenting psychoeducational programs. In addition, students are trained in the topics mentioned above and go out on campus and make. If you are interested in becoming a peer educator, please come to Foreman Hall or call 746-4690 for more information.
