Individual Counseling
Individual counseling provides students with the opportunity
to talk with a professional counselor about concerns or problems
which might interfere with personal growth and academic
achievement. Common issues include relationship concerns (e.g.,
romantic partner, roommate, family), depression, anxiety, stress,
adjustment to college, academic difficulties, and substance use or
abuse.
Couples Counseling
Couples counseling may be an appropriate choice for helping
students resolve problems in a romantic relationship. Couples
counseling may be provided as an adjunct to or instead of
individual counseling.
Group Counseling
Counseling groups offer students the opportunity to get
support and feedback from other students who face issues similar.
Counseling groups are offered on as-needed basis. If a student is
interested in working on a particular issue in a group format, the
counseling staff will help find other students who share the same
concerns to form a group. Past groups have included
Self-Exploration, Eating Disorders, and Adult Children of
Alcoholics (ACOA).
Additional Information About Our Services
Confidentiality
Counseling Services maintains a strict policy of
confidentiality. No information is released without the student's
written permission except where disclosure is required or allowed
by law.
Fees
All counseling services are provided free of charge.
Referrals
If Counseling Services is not the most appropriate service to
meet the student's needs, referrals to other resources will be
made.
SUNY Delhi does not employ a psychiatrist and Health Services
provides only limited prescriptions for psychiatric medications
such as Prozac and Zoloft. If full psychiatric services are
recommended or required a referral will be made to Delaware County
Mental Health Clinic in Walton, NY or to a private psychiatrist in
Oneonta, NY.
Confidential Communications between Counseling and Health
Services Staff
The Counseling Services and Student Health Services at SUNY
Delhi are both located in Foreman Hall and maintain a close working
relationship; referrals from one to the other are common.
Confidential counseling records, and health records are maintained
separately, however, and neither become part of student educational
or placement records. Both offices are committed to teh well-being
of all members of the Delhi College Community, and recognize that
many of the problems college students contend with involve both
physical and emotional components. Confidential communication
extends between the staffs when, in their professional judgment, it
is desirable to consult with one another. Both services adhere to
professional standards of conduct.
