I'm Michael Laliberte, the college 0:00:16.800,0:00:19.920 president and welcome to the incoming classes 0:00:19.920,0:00:25.119 of new students to SUNY Delhi. I am delighted to welcome more than 800 new 0:00:25.119,0:00:29.039 students who are joining our SUNY Delhi community today becoming 0:00:29.039,0:00:32.559 the present and future of SUNY Delhi. I know that 0:00:32.559,0:00:34.960 about a year ago you were engaged in the process of 0:00:34.960,0:00:38.320 trying to make up your minds about where you wanted to spend your collegiate 0:00:38.320,0:00:41.040 years and just what exactly you wanted to 0:00:41.040,0:00:44.120 study. You were also involved in other 0:00:44.120,0:00:49.039 activities that were preparing you to take the next step in your academic 0:00:49.039,0:00:52.559 pursuits such as finishing high school, studying 0:00:52.559,0:00:56.160 for the S.A.T. or readying yourself for a life on 0:00:56.160,0:01:01.440 campus. Then in early 2020 all that changed. 0:01:01.440,0:01:07.439 Due to the COVID 19 pandemic we were all forced into a new reality, one that 0:01:07.439,0:01:12.479 included staying indoors, staying online, wearing masks, and of 0:01:12.479,0:01:15.119 course dealing with the horrific illness that 0:01:15.119,0:01:18.960 has touched so many of our lives. This was not the 0:01:18.960,0:01:24.560 reality that any of us were expecting, or that we anticipated. 0:01:24.560,0:01:28.000 This new way of being created an air of uncertainty 0:01:28.000,0:01:32.640 and anxiety that made us fearful and questioning our future. 0:01:32.640,0:01:36.560 However by your presence here today you have shown 0:01:36.560,0:01:41.280 that you have persevered. You are showing us at SUNY Delhi and the rest of the 0:01:41.280,0:01:44.479 world that you are able to deal with adversity 0:01:44.479,0:01:48.560 and challenges, and you are willing and capable to be 0:01:48.560,0:01:52.560 flexible, adaptable, and accommodating as you 0:01:52.560,0:01:55.840 continue on the path in pursuit of your goals and 0:01:55.840,0:02:00.560 your dreams. This is what we call grit. 0:02:00.560,0:02:03.600 According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, grit 0:02:03.600,0:02:08.080 is defined as having firmness of character and indomitable spirit. 0:02:08.080,0:02:12.319 Characteristics of grit include courage, conscientiousness, 0:02:12.319,0:02:18.560 persistence, resilience, and excellence. These are characteristics that you have 0:02:18.560,0:02:22.720 already displayed in some form in order to be with us this 0:02:22.720,0:02:28.319 academic year. At SUNY Delhi we recognize grit as a 0:02:28.319,0:02:32.160 distinguishing trait demonstrated by many of our most 0:02:32.160,0:02:37.440 successful students and alumni, as well as in our talented 0:02:37.440,0:02:42.879 faculty and staff. Your grit has guided you thus far in your life 0:02:42.879,0:02:46.000 and will continue with you on your path to excellence, 0:02:46.000,0:02:50.560 in pursuit of your goals we celebrate that aspect of each 0:02:50.560,0:02:56.239 and every one of you today. The 0:03:41.120,0:03:44.480 Black Lives Matter movement has called our attention to some of the 0:03:44.480,0:03:49.280 issues and disparities that exist in our society. In order to have a 0:03:49.280,0:03:52.640 society that is able and willing to address 0:03:52.640,0:03:57.360 these disparities everyone needs to be educated on how and 0:03:57.360,0:04:02.720 why these issues have come to exist as well as how to respond and address 0:04:02.720,0:04:08.080 these inequalities. At SUNY Delhi we are committed to providing an 0:04:08.080,0:04:10.799 education that will support our community 0:04:10.799,0:04:15.120 as well as ultimately improve our society. 0:04:15.120,0:04:20.000 As such, throughout the academic year there will be a number of anti-racist & 0:04:20.000,0:04:23.600 decolonization workshops and programs provided 0:04:23.600,0:04:27.280 so that you can begin this process of education. 0:04:27.280,0:04:30.880 Delhi Today will contain announcements about these opportunities. 0:04:30.880,0:04:34.160 I encourage each one of you to take advantage of these programs and 0:04:34.160,0:04:38.000 workshops. It is 0:04:42.240,0:04:46.479 opportunities like these that will provide you with the necessary skills 0:04:46.479,0:04:50.560 and abilities to be successful in the ever-changing, diverse 0:04:50.560,0:04:53.680 world in which we live. 0:04:53.759,0:04:59.600 In closing, I warmly welcome all of you to the SUNY Delhi family. We are pleased to welcome Dr.Vijay 0:05:41.039,0:05:44.800 Pendakur, Cornell University's Robert W. and 0:05:44.800,0:05:49.199 Elizabeth C. Staley dean of students and presidential 0:05:49.199,0:05:53.120 advisor on diversity and equity, as our guest speaker for this year's 0:05:53.120,0:05:56.800 convocation. Vijay's wealth of experience and knowledge, 0:06:15.520,0:06:19.280 as well as his humorous and, approachable personality 0:06:19.280,0:06:25.600 is sure to captivate you in this session. Please welcome Dr. Vijay Pendakur. 0:06:25.600,0:06:29.440 Welcome incoming class to the fall convocation 0:06:29.440,0:06:34.560 for the 2020 academic year. It is such a pleasure to be your 0:06:34.560,0:06:38.720 convocation speaker. I can only imagine what many of you must 0:06:38.720,0:06:42.560 be feeling, starting your education at SUNY Delhi. 0:06:42.560,0:06:46.479 I'm sure there's quite a bit of excitement and maybe even a little bit 0:06:46.479,0:06:50.639 of anxiety about this big life change. All of those 0:06:50.639,0:06:55.360 things are natural and perfectly healthy. Anytime we start big new things, 0:06:55.360,0:06:57.919 particularly ones as important as college, 0:06:57.919,0:07:02.560 it's only human to feel a mix of emotions to kick off the journey. 0:07:02.560,0:07:07.680 And, we are in unusual times. I can bet that you did not plan on 0:07:07.680,0:07:10.880 starting your journey at Delhi in a pandemic. 0:07:10.880,0:07:16.560 Well please know that none of us wanted your start to be this way. I wish I could 0:07:16.560,0:07:20.720 be with you in person in a warm happy gathering 0:07:20.720,0:07:25.280 right in the heart of your campus, but this virtual convocation will have 0:07:25.280,0:07:30.479 to be our way for now. Speaking of unprecedented times, we are 0:07:30.479,0:07:35.680 also in the middle of another season of major activism in our nation 0:07:35.680,0:07:40.240 on core issues of racial justice fairness and inclusion. 0:07:40.240,0:07:45.039 Did you catch that I said another season? For while this summer's activism has 0:07:45.039,0:07:49.919 been impressive, and we've started to see some shifts in our society as a result, 0:07:49.919,0:07:54.639 the movement for full inclusion is as old as the history of racial exclusion 0:07:54.639,0:07:59.360 in this nation. Across those centuries there have been countless major 0:07:59.360,0:08:03.039 movements for racial justice - each holding the potential for 0:08:03.039,0:08:06.720 incremental change and the potential to help this country 0:08:06.720,0:08:10.720 live up to its full ideal. Your institutional leadership at SUNY 0:08:10.720,0:08:14.560 Delhi invited me to serve as your convocation speaker today 0:08:14.560,0:08:17.680 because they too believe that this is a potent moment 0:08:17.680,0:08:21.039 for racial equity and wanted me to share some thoughts that may 0:08:21.039,0:08:26.319 challenge and inspire you to get involved and make a difference. 0:08:26.319,0:08:29.520 Over the next 10 minutes or so I would love to tell you a little bit about 0:08:29.520,0:08:32.399 myself and some of the experiences that made me 0:08:32.399,0:08:36.479 commit my life to this work. I'll then explain, at a high 0:08:36.479,0:08:40.159 level, what diversity, inclusion, and equity are. 0:08:40.159,0:08:43.599 And finally I'll wrap up with some ideas on how and why 0:08:43.599,0:08:47.200 equity and justice work broadly is all of our work, 0:08:47.200,0:08:54.160 including you. My parents are immigrants from two villages in southern India 0:08:54.160,0:08:59.839 they came to North America in 1969 and eventually made their home in Chicago. 0:08:59.839,0:09:03.519 I grew up at the northern edge of the city right at the street that separates 0:09:03.519,0:09:08.640 Chicago from a suburb called Evanston. Sociologists would call 0:09:08.640,0:09:12.720 my neighborhood a borderland, a space between 0:09:12.720,0:09:18.160 two cultural zones. My borderland experience had a profound and lasting 0:09:18.160,0:09:21.760 effect on the arc of my whole life until now. 0:09:21.760,0:09:25.600 See, my neighborhood was predominantly black with some pockets of new 0:09:25.600,0:09:30.560 immigrants from Central America and the Caribbean. It was low income and 0:09:30.560,0:09:36.240 it had been for decades. It was high on crime, high on drug abuse, 0:09:36.240,0:09:42.160 and filled with hopelessness. This was the north side of Chicago in the 1980s. 0:09:42.160,0:09:46.480 And two miles away there was a place that was predominantly white, 0:09:46.480,0:09:49.760 upper income, and extremely well resourced. 0:09:49.760,0:09:54.480 Just two miles north, but it might as well have been a different planet. 0:09:54.480,0:09:58.640 I used to ride the Chicago transit authority bus to high school 0:09:58.640,0:10:02.160 and over the three mile ride the complexion culture and privilege 0:10:02.160,0:10:06.160 privilege level of that bus would change dramatically. 0:10:06.160,0:10:09.440 When I turned 16 the bus once again became a largely 0:10:09.440,0:10:14.160 black and brown. low income zone as many of the kids from north Evanston 0:10:14.160,0:10:19.440 got cars as presents and stopped riding the bus. I went to a high school that was 0:10:19.440,0:10:24.320 celebrated for its diversity, for how well resourced it was, 0:10:24.320,0:10:29.760 and I hated it. High school was an unprecedented disaster for me. 0:10:29.760,0:10:33.040 It felt like two worlds collided in that building. 0:10:33.040,0:10:36.240 Three thousand kids with two different passports. 0:10:36.240,0:10:39.360 We were all supposed to coexist in one space. 0:10:39.360,0:10:43.120 Needless to say it just didn't work. Daily, 0:10:43.120,0:10:46.880 weekly, monthly, I saw examples, extreme examples, 0:10:46.880,0:10:50.720 of how the house you were born in seemed to shape so many experiences in your 0:10:50.720,0:10:53.519 life. If you were lucky enough to be born two 0:10:53.519,0:10:57.279 miles north of me it appeared like things were quite rosy. 0:10:57.279,0:11:00.560 I'd hear stories of sleep away summer camps and 0:11:00.560,0:11:04.480 new cars for birthdays and designer clothes at the change of seasons, 0:11:04.480,0:11:09.920 and other markers of wealth and access. And if you grew up in my neighborhood it 0:11:09.920,0:11:12.800 appeared that there was a much higher chance that you're getting hit up 0:11:12.800,0:11:16.160 for gang initiation by the time you cleared eighth grade. 0:11:16.160,0:11:19.760 Violence and drugs were abundant and despair 0:11:19.760,0:11:24.880 was the eau de parfum. I graduated from high school with a strong sense that 0:11:24.880,0:11:28.640 something was deeply broken with a society that could produce this 0:11:28.640,0:11:32.800 kind of extremes. We don't control where we're born but by 0:11:32.800,0:11:36.800 the time I went to college I had seen repeatedly that this singular 0:11:36.800,0:11:40.720 factor had an enormous shaping power over someone's life. 0:11:40.720,0:11:44.640 It doesn't make it impossible to succeed, but boy 0:11:44.640,0:11:49.360 there are fewer chances that it'll happen. Conversely, you're not guaranteed 0:11:49.360,0:11:52.399 to succeed if you grow up in privilege and affluence, 0:11:52.399,0:11:57.440 but you sure are more likely. So I went to college with all these feelings, 0:11:57.440,0:12:01.839 not a lot of academic knowledge, but a deep visceral sense that something 0:12:01.839,0:12:05.920 Isn't right and I wanted to know what was going on. 0:12:05.920,0:12:10.959 This inner sense of discomfort impelled me to take classes in history and ethnic 0:12:10.959,0:12:14.000 studies, in urban sociology, and other disciplines 0:12:14.000,0:12:17.200 that could offer answers to my burning questions. 0:12:17.200,0:12:20.720 And while this academic journey was progressing I also needed to make some 0:12:20.720,0:12:24.800 money, so I searched for an on-campus job. On a 0:12:24.800,0:12:27.680 total fluke I walked into the multicultural student 0:12:27.680,0:12:32.000 center at my alma mater and asked if they had paying work. I 0:12:32.000,0:12:35.040 didn't even know what a multicultural student center was, 0:12:35.040,0:12:40.639 I just wanted my minimum wage job. Ah, well that changed my life. That job 0:12:40.639,0:12:44.320 changed everything. At the center I met the first adults at 0:12:44.320,0:12:47.200 college that truly looked out for me. They were 0:12:47.200,0:12:49.600 interested in my story and they were interested in me 0:12:49.600,0:12:54.720 as a whole person. Because many of the activists and racial 0:12:54.720,0:12:58.959 justice student organizations also met at the center for their weekly meetings, 0:12:58.959,0:13:03.120 I got to see many of them in action while i was working my late night shifts. 0:13:03.120,0:13:06.800 This encouraged me to join a few organizations and I slowly gained an 0:13:06.800,0:13:10.959 identity as a student activist. By the time i graduated from college my 0:13:10.959,0:13:13.680 coursework, my job at the center, and my 0:13:13.680,0:13:17.680 participation in student organizations had fully shaped my college experience 0:13:17.680,0:13:22.639 and made it so much better. There's a message here for you, you've 0:13:22.639,0:13:26.000 got to get involved in something if you're going to squeeze the 0:13:26.000,0:13:31.600 juice out of your time at SUNY Delhi. Why squeeze the juice? 0:13:31.600,0:13:35.519 Well because college unfortunately can be a transactional experience 0:13:35.519,0:13:40.240 or it can be transformational. It can be a place where you sleepwalk through some 0:13:40.240,0:13:42.560 classes and write those tuition checks and 0:13:42.560,0:13:46.320 leave with a facile diploma, or it can change 0:13:46.320,0:13:55.279 who you are as a person. Who wouldn't choose the latter? I came into my true sense of self at college just as you will at Delhi 0:13:55.279,0:14:00.720 if you take the risk and try new things. As you heard in the introduction that 0:14:00.720,0:14:03.279 preceded my remarks, I've stayed committed 0:14:03.279,0:14:07.360 to that inner feeling of unease and discomfort my whole life. 0:14:07.360,0:14:12.320 Something isn't right here and sadly the inequalities and inequities that 0:14:12.320,0:14:17.440 shaped my youth in the 1980s are still a hallmark of our society. 0:14:17.440,0:14:21.199 So let me get to the academic stuff i mean this is a university convocation 0:14:21.199,0:14:26.000 address right? What do we mean by diversity, equity, 0:14:26.000,0:14:31.519 and inclusion? Three values that are really important to your university. 0:14:31.519,0:14:35.680 Let me offer you a super basic, applicable way to understand these terms 0:14:35.680,0:14:39.920 just for the sake of this keynote. If this stuff is interesting to you, 0:14:39.920,0:14:43.680 you will have many opportunities in college to explore these ideas 0:14:43.680,0:14:49.839 in much greater detail and complexity. Diversity at its most basic level is 0:14:49.839,0:14:53.040 just valuing difference, seeing some greater 0:14:53.040,0:14:55.600 good, and having difference of all kinds in 0:14:55.600,0:15:00.320 the room, in the school, in the workforce, in the 0:15:00.320,0:15:04.800 government. Diversity pushes us to ask the important 0:15:04.800,0:15:09.040 question "who's in the room?" Inclusion 0:15:09.040,0:15:15.199 is valuing the experiences of the people in that room. Do all those different 0:15:15.199,0:15:19.440 people feel safe? Do they feel like they truly belong? Do 0:15:19.440,0:15:24.240 people feel treated fairly? Inclusion requires us to go beyond just 0:15:24.240,0:15:27.920 valuing difference and begin to understand and commit to 0:15:27.920,0:15:31.600 the experience that people, especially people who aren't 0:15:31.600,0:15:37.440 in the majority, have. Equity, that third term, is a bit more 0:15:37.440,0:15:41.360 complicated. First because it's often incorrectly 0:15:41.360,0:15:44.720 used interchangeably with the word equality. 0:15:44.720,0:15:48.240 Watch the news for 10 minutes you'll probably hear politicians say something 0:15:48.240,0:15:50.959 like "we need a more equal and equitable 0:15:50.959,0:15:53.680 society" and they're using those words as 0:15:53.680,0:15:57.920 synonyms when they're not. Equal is a powerful aspiration, 0:15:57.920,0:16:01.680 especially in a country like America where we live in the central 0:16:01.680,0:16:06.079 contradiction of equal being baked into our founding documents 0:16:06.079,0:16:10.160 while our society was designed around numerous inequalities, 0:16:10.160,0:16:14.399 from the time of this same founding. We've been questing for equal for 0:16:14.399,0:16:17.680 centuries- but equal is about the aspiration that 0:16:17.680,0:16:22.560 everyone gets treated exactly the same. And while this is a key 0:16:22.560,0:16:28.079 idea at a larger societal level, equity is actually a very different idea. 0:16:28.079,0:16:32.000 Equity at its core is the idea that you can put a lot of different people in the 0:16:32.000,0:16:35.360 room, doing the work of diversity, and you can 0:16:35.360,0:16:38.000 even treat them all nicely and fairly, doing the work of 0:16:38.000,0:16:40.880 inclusion. But if you really want to provide the 0:16:40.880,0:16:45.360 conditions that optimize outcomes for people, you have to change 0:16:45.360,0:16:50.160 the systems and structures that create the conditions of our experience. 0:16:50.160,0:16:55.279 Equity is the process of transforming a school, a company, a team, or a country 0:16:55.279,0:16:58.639 into a place that allows all of those different people 0:16:58.639,0:17:03.199 to truly thrive. So while diversity is challenging us to ask 0:17:03.199,0:17:07.360 "who's in the room" an equality is challenging us to commit to those that 0:17:07.360,0:17:12.000 are in the room being treated well, equity is pushing us to consider all the 0:17:12.000,0:17:14.720 barriers to getting in the room in the first place, or 0:17:14.720,0:17:18.079 the conditions in the room that will likely lead to some people succeeding at 0:17:18.079,0:17:20.559 far greater rates than other people - to no 0:17:20.559,0:17:24.799 merit of their own. Equity can get really complicated really 0:17:24.799,0:17:27.679 quickly and this is a convocation address not 0:17:27.679,0:17:30.720 a classroom lecture, so let me put it like this - 0:17:30.720,0:17:33.840 we are living in a moment of extraordinary activism 0:17:33.840,0:17:38.000 for racial equity. This is a movement focused on race 0:17:38.000,0:17:42.320 and the movement isn't saying please just admit us into your organizations, or 0:17:42.320,0:17:46.640 your schools, or your government, or please just treat us a little better. 0:17:46.640,0:17:50.480 It's a movement calling for the fundamental transformation of 0:17:50.480,0:17:54.799 the structures that produce differential and unfair outcomes for 0:17:54.799,0:17:58.480 people of color in almost every sector of life, whether it 0:17:58.480,0:18:02.240 be policing, the employment market, schools, or health 0:18:02.240,0:18:04.880 care, this is a mass movement for racial 0:18:04.880,0:18:08.080 equity and it's about changing the fundamentals 0:18:08.080,0:18:11.440 so people of color don't have to continue to just survive 0:18:11.440,0:18:16.080 in this country but they can actually begin to thrive. 0:18:16.080,0:18:20.080 To be coy about it, inclusion might have us clapping 0:18:20.080,0:18:24.160 that NASCAR finally decided to stop allowing folks to fly the confederate 0:18:24.160,0:18:28.320 flag inside their events - equity is saying um, 0:18:28.320,0:18:30.880 that's nice, but let's look at all the barriers to 0:18:30.880,0:18:34.480 meaningful participation that have kept people of color out of 0:18:34.480,0:18:37.440 this lucrative industry since its founding, and let's do 0:18:37.440,0:18:41.760 something about that. Diversity, inclusion, and equity are core 0:18:41.760,0:18:45.840 values for SUNY Delhi. Your university leadership truly 0:18:45.840,0:18:48.400 believes that a complete college education 0:18:48.400,0:18:51.760 also means gaining some confidence in these ideas and understanding how 0:18:51.760,0:18:55.520 critical they are for our society, for american democracy 0:18:55.520,0:18:59.200 to flourish. The good news is that there are so many 0:18:59.200,0:19:04.240 ways for you to engage in the social transformation that these ideas call for. 0:19:04.240,0:19:07.520 You can take classes on these subjects or join student orgs 0:19:07.520,0:19:12.320 that care about these ideas, or get a paying job where these ideas are in the 0:19:12.320,0:19:15.679 job description. I mean i've sort of made a career out of doing 0:19:15.679,0:19:19.360 this work!
