[00:00:02.11] [upbeat music] [00:00:07.10] [00:00:08.15] Good evening and welcome to our presidential scholarship reception. [00:00:11.20] [00:00:11.20] My name is Adam Lang and I'm the scholarship coordinator here at SUNY Delhi. [00:00:14.23] [00:00:16.11] In a year when everything is but normal, [00:00:18.06] [00:00:18.06] I'm relieved that we are able to continue this tradition [00:00:21.01] [00:00:21.01] even though it may not be in the traditional format. [00:00:24.04] [00:00:24.04] It's extremely important that we recognize our presidential scholarship [00:00:27.05] [00:00:27.05] recipients and support them as they begin their academic tenure here at SUNY Delhi. [00:00:31.14] [00:00:32.16] The presidential scholarship is one of our campus's most prestigious awards. [00:00:36.16] [00:00:36.22] Applicants must possess a 90 high school GPA, submit official SAT and ACT scores and [00:00:42.23] [00:00:42.23] have graduated either from a Delaware County or surrounding county high school. [00:00:47.05] [00:00:47.05] Then each recipient or applicant must complete an interview with our [00:00:51.05] [00:00:51.05] presidential scholarship committee. That said, if received, each recipient [00:00:56.17] [00:00:56.17] receives a full tuition scholarship, including mandatory fees. [00:01:00.21] [00:01:00.21] We hope that this award will not only assist you financially but will also [00:01:04.08] [00:01:04.08] empower you to become a student leader on our campus [00:01:07.01] [00:01:07.01] as well as in our local community. Before I introduce our [00:01:11.07] [00:01:11.07] recipients, I'd like to include a message from President Michael Laliberte [00:01:15.03] [00:01:15.03] as well as a short interview with current student presidential scholarship [00:01:19.01] [00:01:19.01] recipient Clyde Van Dyke. [00:01:21.19] [00:01:22.08] Hi, and welcome to our celebration of the presidential scholarship [00:01:27.07] [00:01:27.07] recipients. My name is Michael Laliberte and I'm the college president at [00:01:31.07] [00:01:31.07] SUNY Delhi. I want to congratulate all of our [00:01:34.00] [00:01:34.00] recipients. You're all outstanding scholars and deserve [00:01:38.19] [00:01:38.19] all of the accolades that go along with the scholarship. We are excited to have [00:01:42.19] [00:01:42.19] you joining our community, and this year especially I really want [00:01:46.04] [00:01:46.04] to say we're excited about the diversity of our population, [00:01:51.20] [00:01:51.20] the different majors that are represented, the different schools that are [00:01:55.05] [00:01:55.05] represented. All of you are representing different [00:01:57.20] [00:01:57.20] areas than we've had in the past and I really [00:01:59.18] [00:02:00.08] think that that's important that we're mixing folks from different academic [00:02:04.10] [00:02:04.10] backgrounds to recognize them for all their [00:02:08.08] [00:02:08.08] work and everything that they do. One of the [00:02:10.17] [00:02:10.17] reasons why we provide this scholarship is we don't [00:02:14.21] [00:02:14.21] want students to have to worry about money and how they're going to pay for [00:02:18.17] [00:02:18.17] their scholarships and paying tuition. We want to free them up to explore other [00:02:23.01] [00:02:23.01] opportunities, and so I'm really encouraging you to [00:02:25.22] [00:02:25.22] look at the leadership opportunities on campus. [00:02:28.21] [00:02:28.21] I know we're going to hear from one of our RAs [00:02:32.00] [00:02:32.00] He is able to have that RA job that gives him a lot of leadership experience [00:02:37.12] [00:02:37.12] and shows the community that he's a leader and helps to [00:02:41.14] [00:02:41.14] contribute and give back. And one of the important things about [00:02:44.21] [00:02:44.21] SUNY Delhi education is that we have a strong commitment to [00:02:48.06] [00:02:48.06] community service and giving back. We want you to use this opportunity to [00:02:51.22] [00:02:51.22] give back to our community and to give back to our society. [00:02:56.08] [00:02:56.08] So again, congratulations. I wish that we were able to be there in [00:02:59.03] [00:02:59.03] person to offer our congratulations but we're really very very pleased to [00:03:03.14] [00:03:03.14] have you and we are very excited to see what you're [00:03:07.00] [00:03:07.07] going to do with your time here at SUNY Delhi. [00:03:10.02] [00:03:10.02] Welcome and congratulations! [00:03:13.00] [00:03:13.12] So good evening, everyone. [00:03:14.17] [00:03:15.00] I'm here with Clyde Van Dyke who is a second year student at SUNY Delhi [00:03:19.12] [00:03:19.12] and also a recipient of the presidential scholarship. He received it last year. [00:03:24.12] [00:03:24.12] Clyde is a Cyber Operations program manager here. [00:03:29.03] [00:03:29.03] He's in the four-year program. He is also a resident assistant [00:03:32.08] [00:03:32.08] in O'Connor Hall. He is a member of UDE and he is also an employee of CADI. [00:03:39.05] [00:03:39.05] So, in many ways, you're kind of the face of Delhi, you're on [00:03:43.11] [00:03:43.11] a lot of marketing materials. So I just want to take some time to interview [00:03:48.08] [00:03:48.08] Clyde, tell his experience so far at Delhi and share [00:03:51.22] [00:03:51.22] it with you all. So Clyde, what does it mean to you to be [00:03:56.00] [00:03:56.00] a presidential scholar? To me, being a presidential scholar just [00:04:00.02] [00:04:00.02] means that the college is looking at me [00:04:03.22] [00:04:03.22] and they just see something in me that they want to invest [00:04:06.21] [00:04:06.21] money and time, and they see that I'm gonna do good in the world and [00:04:10.19] [00:04:10.19] stuff like that. It really means a lot to me to know that [00:04:14.04] [00:04:14.04] the college wants to invest in me and my future [00:04:17.18] [00:04:17.18] because they know they want to see me give back and [00:04:20.11] [00:04:20.11] of course, after I'm done with college and everything, I definitely want to give [00:04:22.23] [00:04:22.23] back to the local area. So it just means a lot that the [00:04:26.04] [00:04:26.04] college is encouraging me to continue to pursue my education. [00:04:31.18] [00:04:31.18] How has this award impacted you personally? [00:04:35.12] [00:04:35.12] This award impacts me personally because, a no-brainer, I don't have to pay for [00:04:41.05] [00:04:41.05] tuition which is a big relief on my shoulders because [00:04:45.03] [00:04:45.03] being in a low-income family, that's definitely a big [00:04:49.11] [00:04:49.11] a big chunk of money that would have to go towards my education. [00:04:52.19] [00:04:52.19] And I probably wouldn't be able to pursue college if I had to pay something [00:04:56.13] [00:04:56.13] like that. So this has definitely changed my [00:04:59.18] [00:04:59.18] life profoundly because i'm able to pursue [00:05:02.06] [00:05:02.06] the things I want to do. I've always had a passion for computers [00:05:06.06] [00:05:06.06] so being able to go to SUNY Delhi in a local area [00:05:09.14] [00:05:09.14] not too far away from home - I only live like an hour away - and being able to do [00:05:13.11] [00:05:13.11] stuff that I want to do and just be able to invest in one-on-one [00:05:16.17] [00:05:16.17] with my professors at a smaller college is definitely something I was really [00:05:20.06] [00:05:20.06] looking forward to and the scholarship has [00:05:22.02] [00:05:22.02] just allowed me to do just that. So I'm very grateful for this opportunity. [00:05:26.02] [00:05:28.02] So obviously your first year has been very successful but how would you say [00:05:31.05] [00:05:31.05] your first year went and then what are you looking forward to [00:05:34.02] [00:05:34.06] during your second year, your sophomore year here? My first year definitely has [00:05:37.12] [00:05:37.12] gone very good. A lot of opportunities came my way [00:05:40.04] [00:05:40.04] and I definitely take in those opportunities to [00:05:42.17] [00:05:42.17] grow myself as a person and as a student. [00:05:46.00] [00:05:46.00] For this upcoming year, I want to get involved more [00:05:49.14] [00:05:49.14] with more activities and clubs, so [00:05:52.19] [00:05:52.19] Residence Hall Association, I've just been appointed the president for that [00:05:56.13] [00:05:56.13] right now, so I'm looking forward to getting our new students I'm encouraging [00:06:00.19] [00:06:00.19] them to get on Zoom or come in person to some [00:06:04.13] [00:06:04.13] of the activities that we plan on hosting as well as [00:06:07.05] [00:06:07.05] getting more involved in Greek life. I'm a member of Upsilon Delta Epsilon [00:06:10.17] [00:06:10.17] College Fraternity Incorporated. So I want to get involved more with the [00:06:14.04] [00:06:14.04] Greek community and see more unification and seeing how we can get [00:06:18.10] [00:06:18.10] more students exposed to the idea that Greek life is something [00:06:22.13] [00:06:22.13] to do and it's not like how the movies depict it. [00:06:26.04] [00:06:26.04] And it's just a lot of fun and we do a lot of stuff in the community that [00:06:29.16] [00:06:29.16] a lot of giving back. So I hope to just expand the Greek community and [00:06:34.06] [00:06:34.06] residence life itself. [00:06:36.00] [00:06:36.00] That's great. That's kind of a great segue to the next [00:06:38.00] [00:06:38.06] question. How would you encourage this new [00:06:40.19] [00:06:40.19] incoming cohort of presidential scholars to get involved? [00:06:44.13] [00:06:44.13] So I would definitely encourage everyone to check the Delhi Today email because [00:06:48.08] [00:06:48.08] there's always a lot of opportunities that are going to be out there. [00:06:51.03] [00:06:51.03] I encourage you to get in contact with your professors, [00:06:54.23] [00:06:54.23] gain contact, always talk to your friends, talk to [00:06:58.02] [00:06:58.02] your residence hall director. There's always connections out there. [00:07:01.03] [00:07:01.03] So I encourage you just to get out there, definitely socialize, [00:07:04.11] [00:07:04.11] talk to people because you never know what connection someone might have. [00:07:08.08] [00:07:08.08] So yeah, I just encourage everyone just to [00:07:11.18] [00:07:11.18] communicate and just get yourself out there and [00:07:17.09] [00:07:17.09] don't feel tied down. Feel open. Just shoot for your dreams. [00:07:23.07] [00:07:23.12] Great. Any last-minute advice or tidbits for success? [00:07:27.07] [00:07:28.00] I would say my last little tidbit of advice for success would be [00:07:32.07] [00:07:33.03] make sure you write stuff down on your calendar [00:07:35.20] [00:07:35.20] and your online journals and stuff like that. [00:07:38.06] [00:07:38.06] It's definitely gonna help you out in the long run because that's [00:07:40.19] [00:07:40.19] something I do. And also make sure you don't let [00:07:44.00] [00:07:44.00] anyone stop you from pursuing your goals [00:07:46.15] [00:07:46.15] because you define who you are at the end of the day. [00:07:49.01] [00:07:49.14] Great. Well thank you, that's all the questions I have for you. [00:07:51.10] [00:07:51.10] I'll give you an elbow bump. [00:07:53.10] [00:07:58.10] And now I'd like to introduce this year's presidential scholarship recipients. [00:08:03.03] [00:08:03.16] Sarah Ackerly. Sarah is studying [00:08:06.06] [00:08:06.06] Childhood Education and was born and raised in Delhi and [00:08:09.18] [00:08:09.18] graduated from Delaware Academy.
