[00:04:47.12] citizenship can be described in many [00:04:50.19] [00:04:49.11] ways [00:04:53.12] [00:04:50.19] in its most literal form it describes [00:04:54.06] [00:04:53.12] the nation [00:04:57.12] [00:04:54.06] to which an individual belongs [00:05:00.00] [00:04:57.12] in these trying times of a health [00:05:01.09] [00:05:00.00] pandemic [00:05:04.13] [00:05:01.09] social unrest and the pursuit of equity [00:05:07.16] [00:05:04.13] it describes so much more [00:05:11.01] [00:05:07.16] in the words of muhammad ali service to [00:05:11.18] [00:05:11.01] others [00:05:14.02] [00:05:11.18] is the rent you pay for your room here [00:05:15.20] [00:05:14.02] on earth [00:05:18.19] [00:05:15.20] the individuals honored today have shown [00:05:20.21] [00:05:18.19] that through [00:05:29.16] they held firm to the belief that one [00:05:34.06] [00:05:32.04] person can make a difference [00:05:35.20] [00:05:34.06] or that a group of determined [00:05:37.20] [00:05:35.20] individuals can really make that [00:05:40.06] [00:05:37.20] difference [00:05:40.06] [00:05:40.21] we find in their commitment and work in [00:05:44.11] [00:05:43.09] our communities [00:05:47.07] [00:05:44.11] the hope that things will get better [00:05:48.08] [00:05:47.07] that together [00:05:51.07] [00:05:48.08] we can all work for positive change and [00:05:52.21] [00:05:51.07] for [00:07:13.11] hi i'm sitting here with sebastian ruras [00:07:22.10] [00:07:17.05] the president of upsilon delta epsilon [00:07:25.09] [00:07:22.10] udi as we all know them throughout the [00:07:26.11] [00:07:25.09] campus [00:07:30.04] [00:07:26.11] has been selected as this year's [00:07:32.15] [00:07:30.04] club of the year sebastian would you [00:07:33.11] [00:07:32.15] like to share [00:07:37.01] [00:07:33.11] just a brief um overview of yourself [00:07:39.16] [00:07:37.01] yes um so my name is sebastian ruiz i'm [00:07:41.14] [00:07:39.16] a senior in the culinary arts management [00:07:44.04] [00:07:41.14] track here at suny delhi i [00:07:46.10] [00:07:44.04] am in eop i've been heavily involved on [00:07:47.09] [00:07:46.10] campus and i'm [00:07:49.07] [00:07:47.09] a part of just about everything [00:07:51.05] [00:07:49.07] everybody knows me [00:07:54.10] [00:07:51.05] sebastian i'd like you to share about [00:07:55.12] [00:07:54.10] udi [00:07:57.05] [00:07:55.12] what about it that makes it such a [00:07:59.11] [00:07:57.05] special co-ed fraternity [00:08:00.21] [00:07:59.11] so what makes us very special to the [00:08:02.11] [00:08:00.21] daha community is because we are co-ed [00:08:04.06] [00:08:02.11] so that means that we accept both males [00:08:05.05] [00:08:04.06] and females [00:08:06.23] [00:08:05.05] non-binary whatever your agenda is does [00:08:09.01] [00:08:06.23] not matter okay we will accept you [00:08:10.08] [00:08:09.01] simply because we [00:08:13.07] [00:08:10.08] look for quality we're in an individual [00:08:14.19] [00:08:13.07] and so that's what we pride ourselves on [00:08:16.08] [00:08:14.19] being inclusive we have people from all [00:08:18.15] [00:08:16.08] over the world we have a korean we have [00:08:20.15] [00:08:18.15] mexicans we have spanish it doesn't even [00:08:22.10] [00:08:20.15] matter that's not what we're looking for [00:08:23.18] [00:08:22.10] we're looking to build an environment [00:08:24.21] [00:08:23.18] where everybody's included [00:08:26.19] [00:08:24.21] they feel welcomed and loved so ude [00:08:28.15] [00:08:26.19] quite literally means united diversity [00:08:30.08] [00:08:28.15] eternity [00:08:32.21] [00:08:30.08] and so that's what we stand for can you [00:08:33.14] [00:08:32.21] tell me [00:08:36.22] [00:08:33.14] why it's important for greek [00:08:38.15] [00:08:36.22] organizations [00:08:41.07] [00:08:38.15] to be involved with community service [00:08:43.03] [00:08:41.07] it's very important for us to get as [00:08:45.07] [00:08:43.03] involved as we possibly can [00:08:47.11] [00:08:45.07] so speaking of our community in general [00:08:48.21] [00:08:47.11] in delhi we do have an elderly [00:08:49.22] [00:08:48.21] population [00:08:51.20] [00:08:49.22] um so just on main street there's our [00:08:53.16] [00:08:51.20] residential area specifically for the [00:08:54.17] [00:08:53.16] elderly [00:08:56.12] [00:08:54.17] and so like amazon that's absolutely has [00:08:57.18] [00:08:56.12] done a community service event there [00:08:58.10] [00:08:57.18] where we [00:09:00.08] [00:08:58.10] mulch the ground we put implants and [00:09:01.11] [00:09:00.08] we've done a bunch of ramping that they [00:09:03.12] [00:09:01.11] simply cannot do themselves [00:09:05.11] [00:09:03.12] so that's one of the situations where [00:09:06.17] [00:09:05.11] community service really does benefit [00:09:07.14] [00:09:06.17] our community [00:09:10.02] [00:09:07.14] and even then like if you go out and do [00:09:11.16] [00:09:10.02] simple events like cleanups [00:09:13.07] [00:09:11.16] which is something you could do whenever [00:09:14.19] [00:09:13.07] you want to literally [00:09:16.17] [00:09:14.19] and that helps the way the environment [00:09:18.12] [00:09:16.17] looks it makes it healthier for us to [00:09:20.00] [00:09:18.12] live here it's better for when people [00:09:20.23] [00:09:20.00] pass by [00:09:22.02] [00:09:20.23] and they can just see that it's a [00:09:24.02] [00:09:22.02] beautiful little village that's true [00:09:27.09] [00:09:24.02] out of all the activities this past [00:09:30.17] [00:09:27.09] year covid you know 2020 [00:09:33.22] [00:09:30.17] what is udi most proud of so one of the [00:09:35.20] [00:09:33.22] events we are most proud of is an event [00:09:36.02] [00:09:35.20] we [00:09:39.16] [00:09:36.02] hosted um with safe against violence [00:09:41.16] [00:09:39.16] it's a domestic violence awareness film [00:09:42.23] [00:09:41.16] and so what we did was [00:09:45.09] [00:09:42.23] we simply had a film show in centennial [00:09:46.08] [00:09:45.09] center [00:09:48.04] [00:09:46.08] and all we did was watch it and then [00:09:49.12] [00:09:48.04] talk about it like what were the key [00:09:51.01] [00:09:49.12] points throughout the movie that showed [00:09:52.19] [00:09:51.01] like how serious can domestic violence [00:09:53.11] [00:09:52.19] be [00:09:55.16] [00:09:53.11] how hard can it be to detect it and what [00:09:57.09] [00:09:55.16] can you do to save a life [00:09:58.17] [00:09:57.09] how can you do to save your own life if [00:10:00.17] [00:09:58.17] you're in that situation so it's about [00:10:01.16] [00:10:00.17] like [00:10:03.09] [00:10:01.16] educating our environment especially [00:10:05.01] [00:10:03.09] with such young people who can easily be [00:10:06.04] [00:10:05.01] in these situations [00:10:10.10] [00:10:06.04] that's true whether it's an individual [00:10:13.22] [00:10:10.10] a club an organization or all of us as [00:10:17.07] [00:10:13.22] you know a community why [00:10:19.07] [00:10:17.07] should we do community service what [00:10:20.12] [00:10:19.07] would you say [00:10:22.21] [00:10:20.12] i say that no matter what you can always [00:10:24.13] [00:10:22.21] build in time for community service and [00:10:26.10] [00:10:24.13] it definitely benefits more than [00:10:28.02] [00:10:26.10] not only yourself but the people around [00:10:29.20] [00:10:28.02] you i think it's also [00:10:31.07] [00:10:29.20] it always benefits to give as much as [00:10:32.23] [00:10:31.07] you possibly can to people around you [00:10:33.22] [00:10:32.23] because you never know when you're gonna [00:10:35.01] [00:10:33.22] need to help yourself [00:10:36.08] [00:10:35.01] yeah because there could come a time [00:10:38.02] [00:10:36.08] where you simply can't do those simple [00:10:39.16] [00:10:38.02] things like clean in front of your house [00:10:41.22] [00:10:39.16] and you might need somebody to do and i [00:10:43.01] [00:10:41.22] would personally love if somebody could [00:10:44.13] [00:10:43.01] help me in that situation [00:10:48.08] [00:10:44.13] tell me about it and um i know that [00:10:51.11] [00:10:48.08] i do presentations all the time about [00:10:51.20] [00:10:51.11] those [00:10:54.17] [00:10:51.20] essential skills that people need [00:10:55.07] [00:10:54.17] because [00:10:58.04] [00:10:55.07] you can take a community service project [00:10:58.21] [00:10:58.04] and develop [00:11:01.11] [00:10:58.21] skills whether it would be in technology [00:11:02.21] [00:11:01.11] communications [00:11:05.16] [00:11:02.21] to make yourself ready for the workforce [00:11:08.00] [00:11:05.16] or your the community you live in [00:11:11.01] [00:11:08.00] so um you're right on target [00:11:13.14] [00:11:11.01] but i want to congratulate you and your [00:11:15.12] [00:11:13.14] brothers and sisters again i'm very relief to our community [00:12:05.03] [00:12:01.11] last spring during the covid 19 shutdown [00:12:07.05] [00:12:05.03] the initiative was spearheaded by [00:12:08.21] [00:12:07.05] jacqueline oliver
