Service / Learning

The Parks and Recreation Service Learning Courses offer students the opportunity to work with various community organizations to provide outdoor programming and develop community parks, trails, and facilities. To date, students in the course have engaged in projects such as: construction and installation of low-ropes course elements for Margaretville Central School, trail and construction projects at the SUNY Delhi Outdoor Education Center, Adirondack tea bench construction, oversight and implementation of environmental restoration projects, and design and construction of a trail system for the proposed Catskill Water Discovery Center. Students have provided outdoor programming for the Delaware County ARC including: snowshoeing, maple sugaring, wilderness survival skills, aquatic ecology, hiking, and orienteering. Students in the class also developed and implemented a community maple sugaring day at the Outdoor Education Center. Students in the course were recognized by the Delaware County ARC in an award given to SUNY Delhi for being the ARC community partner of the year for 2010.

This course also provides a summer internship opportunity in which students maintain and operate the SUNY Delhi Outdoor Education Center and work with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection in streamside restoration projects throughout the Catskills.
