Associate in Occupational Studies Degree in: Electrical Construction and Instrumentation

This college degree is available to IBEW-NECA electricians everywhere, because the course requirements are met in an on-line  format.

Based on the recommendations of the American Council on Education, 51 college credits are equated to the 5-Year Electrican Apprenticeship.

Introduction

SUNY Delhi and the Tri-City Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee of Latham, New York have partnered to offer an Associate Degree in Electrical Construction and Instrumentation to IBEW-NECA Electricians. Apprentices who have completed two years of their apprenticeship, can enroll in this program concurrently, and finish their apprenticeship with both Journeyman status and an Associate Degree. 

Requirements for completion of this Associate in Occupational Studies Degree are:

Background

Journeyman Electricians complete a 5-year apprenticeship period consisting of formal classroom studies and hands-on employment as a union electrician.   Classroom studies consist of at least 900 (nine hundred) hours of electrical construction coursework, with at least 4000 (four thousand) hours of full time on-the-job training as electricians.  Successful completion of the 5-year apprenticeship program is marked by a 5 th year final exam which must be passed before earning Journeyman status.

SUNY Delhi will equate the 5 year apprenticeship to 51 credits towards its A.O.S. Degree in Electrical Construction and Instrumentation. Enrollees will complete an additional 12 credits of general study courses through SUNY Delhi. The combination of 51 course challenge credits, and the general study courses will satisfy the 63 credit hour requirement for the A.O.S. degree. The four general study courses totaling 12 credit hours are:

Procedures and Requirements for Earning the Degree

  1. IBEW electricians are eligible to enroll in this degree program if they have completed a minimum of 2 years of their 5 year apprenticeship.

  2. Individuals who meet the above criteria, can enroll in the program in the program in a number of ways.  The most direct is to enroll on-line through the SUNY Online Application process available at www.suny.edu.  Follow the links for "Future Students" and "Apply Online."  Set up your identity with an e-mail address and a Password that will get you into the Online Application.  Under the Preliminary questions, identify yourself as a "Transfer" student, not a "New" student.  When choosing the Campus, choose "Delhi, College of Technology." Also choose the next, upcoming semester for a starting date.  And for Curriculum choose "Electrical Const and Instrument (Jointly Reg w/Tri-City)(1926)".   A few weeks after the Online Application is submitted, you will begin to receive written correspondence from the Enrollment Office at SUNY Delhi regarding your application and acceptance into the program.   3. Individuals who have been Accepted into the program can begin taking the 4 required courses through SUNY Delhi at any time.  The four courses are usually offered on-line during the Fall Semester, Spring Semester, and Summer Session.  Course availability will be listed on the College’s main website, www.delhi.edu.   Completion of a simple online registration form is all that is required to enroll in the course as a part time student. Standard tuition for these courses is listed in Attachment II. The Enrollment Office at Delhi College will assist you if you have problems registering for these courses.  607 746 4555.
        
  4. After an accepted student has completed the 12 credits through SUNY Delhi, he or she can ask to be a Candidate for Graduation. The College will then review the applicant’s accomplishments regarding the graduation requirements which are:

    • Completion of 12 credit hours of coursework through  SUNY Delhi with an overall “C” average (2.00 out of 4.00)

    • Proof of successful completion of the 5-Year, Final apprenticeship examination with a score of 75 or higher

    • Proof of 900 hours of classroom instruction and 4000 hours of on-the-job apprenticeship training

    • Submission of the Course Challenge fee, $1020, and any other fees. Send the check to Student Accounts, SUNY Delhi, Delhi, NY 13753

    • Submission of a "Petition to Graduate."  Call the Office of Records and Registration to have a Petition sent or faxed to you.  607 746 4561  Fill out the Petition and return it to the Office of Records and Registration.
       

  5. If these submissions are satisfactory, the applicant will be awarded the A.O. S. Degree in Electrical Construction and Instrumentation from SUNY Delhi.

Comparative Cost of this Degree

The cost of earning this joint degree is a little more than $3000.  The same degree taken "on campus" would cost $8500 in tuition alone.  This joint degree is a unique opportunity for journeyman electricians to obtain an associate degree at a very reasonable cost.

Individual Student Evaluation

A mandatory, non-refundable Course Challenge fee is required prior to faculty evaluation of coursework, on-the-job work experience and comprehensive written exams.  Successful evaluation will result in the awarding of 51 transfer credit hours.

 Frequently Asked Questions

I am a Journeyman from a "4-year" apprenticeship program, instead of a "5 year" apprenticeship program.  Can I receive a Degree through this program?

Answer: Yes and No.  

Yes, if you can submit a listing of at least 12 to 15 IBEW related educatonal and training actitities, courses, seminars, workshops, that you have attended/completed during the past 10 years. 

No, if you cannot submit this list of IBEW related training activities.

Can I substitute or transfer to Delhi any courses which I have taken at another college, and use them to replace the 4 courses, 12 credits, that are required?

No, to complete this program, everyone must take 4 courses, 12 credits, through SUNY Delhi.

How do I get started in this program?

First, Enroll in the program by going to http://www.suny.edu and follow the instructions given in #2 above under Procedures and Requirements.

Second, Start taking the courses online by enrolling in a course according to the instructions in #3 above under Procedures and Requirements. Each of the 4 courses will cost you about 400 dollars.

After I enroll in the program and complete the 4 courses, what happens?

We will ask you to submit to us proof that you have completed an IBEW apprenticeship.
This can be a copy of your journeyman certification, or, a letter from your Local's Training Director stating when and where you met the journeyman requirements.
(4 year journeyman will have to submit at this time, the additional documentation mentioned in FAQ #1)

We will ask you to submit a check for 1020 dollars for the 51 challenge credits which we are equating to your journeyman status.  Send the check to Student Accounts, SUNY Delhi, Delhi, NY 13753

When this paperwork is complete, you will be put on the College's "candidate for graduation" list.  The College graduates students in December, May, and August.  You will receive your diploma approximate 6-8 weeks after the month of your official graduation.
