Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for consideration, an applicant must:

• be a high school graduate with a minimum 75% overall average or have a minimum 2500 GED test score
• have 75% or higher on the Algebra Regents exam

SUNY General Education Requirements: Students who intend to receive A.A., A.S., or baccalaureate degrees must satisfy SUNY and campus General Education (GE) requirements to graduate. Students should be aware that GE requirements may vary by academic program. Consult with your academic advisor. For general information, see the "General Education" section of this catalog.

A.A.S. and A.O.S. degree students may not be required to fulfill General Education (GE) requirements; however, any student who may wish to transfer should complete as many GE courses as possible. Consult with your academic advisor.

Technical Standards: In addition to academic requirements, all applicants must also be able to meet the minimum Technical Standards for the program, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Academic Requirements:

Minimum Total Credit Hours = 62

Major Courses Required = 51 credit hours

General Education/Liberal Arts Courses Required = 3 credit hours

Restricted Elective by Advisement = 6 credit hours

Unrestricted Electives = 2 credit hours

*Note:  Mathematics is by placement according to competency.  MATH 102 Mathematics for Applied Technology is the minimum requirement for this degree program.

Student Learning Outcomes

A graduate of the A.O.S. in Plumbing and Electrical Instrumentation, should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the ability to safely use common test equipment.
2. Calculate electrical circuit configurations, including series, parallel, and series-parallel.
3. Diagnose residential and commercial heating control systems.
4. Calculate voltage sources, both single-phase and three-phase, including alternators, generators, and batteries.
5. Observe National Electric Code compliance, including calculating wire sizes, sizing starters, fuses, and overloads.
6. Understand magnetism and magnetic properties.
7. Calculate RLC circuits (resistance, inductance, capacitance).
8. Calculate power transmission systems (transformers).
9. Use programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
10. Understand AC motors and alternators, both single- and three-phase.
11. Understand and apply the International Plumbing Code and New York State Code.
12. Demonstrate basic knowledge of plumbing materials, tools, and equipment.
13. Display the ability to measure, cut, and join steel pipe, copper tubing, plastic and cast-iron soil pipe; demonstrate knowledge of fittings as well as basic fabrication of sheet-metal principles and layout techniques.
14. Exhibit basic drafting techniques as they relate to the plumbing, heating, and pipefitting field through the completion of various drawings, such as: piping isometrics, plumbing floor plans, and riser diagrams.
15. Install residential hydronic and steam heating systems, and indirect and direct domestic water heaters.
16. Design and install warm-air heating systems and the various types of hot-water heating systems for residential and light commercial buildings.
17. Design and install potable water, sanitary waste, and vent systems in residential and light commercial buildings.
18. Correctly and safely wire oil and gas boilers and warm-air heating systems.
19. Display an understanding of building energy requirements, and demonstrate the ability to perform residential heat-loss calculations.
20. Recognize and respond to emergencies by making appropriate decisions regarding first-aid care.
