PREPARING FOR AN INTERVIEW
Before you get there:
- Research the employer
- Search yourself (employers will) Facebook/ Blogs/YouTube- adjust as needed
- Have resume, references and portfolio up to date - make extra copies
- Create a list of questions you can ask the employer
- Get name & title of person who will interview you if possible
- Practice questions prior to interview
- Map out route to place of interview
First Impressions
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early for your interview
- Keep cell phone/ electronic devices off or in the car
- Be very polite to the receptionist- they are actually interviewing you as well
- No food, drink or gum chewing in waiting area
- Do not use heavy perfumes or smell of smoke
- Tatoos and piercings should be covered unless you know of employer's philosophy
- Neat, professional dress appropriate for the position
- Minimal jewelry and make-up
During Interview
- Smile & use eye contact
- Handshake
- Attitude- positive and real
- OK to be nervous
- Ask questions (do not bring up salary-unless employer does)
- Be prepared-resume, portfolio, sample of writing, driver's license, SS card
- Pad and pen to take brief notes during interview
- Thank the person for the interview- shake their hand
- Get a business card from all you met and ask permission to follow up
After the Interview
- Professional thank you note sent that day or no later than 24 hours
- Evaluate interview and your performance
- Is the job right for you?
- Follow up
