Gary Hunsinger, MS, RN
Major Hunsinger has been an adjunct faculty member since 2008. He brings over 40 years of experience and knowledge to the program. He is an associate professor of nursing at Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Florida since retiring from the United States Air Force in August 1999. As full-time nursing faculty member at that college, he is the clinical coordinator for the practical nursing program and teaches various nursing theory courses in all programs.
Prior to his tenure in this capacity, Major Hunsinger served 25 years on active duty, seven as an enlisted medic and his last 18 years as an Air Force Nurse Officer. His assignments included various stateside bases and overseas areas where he was in clinical nurse positions in intensive care, cardio-thoracic, and medical-surgical units. Additionally, he held nurse-manager positions and was a flight nurse logging over 1700 hours as Medical Crew Director on board the Air Force’s C-9A Nightingale Hospital Aircraft. His final assignment was Patrick Air Force Base, Florida where he was Nurse Exec of the Aeromedical-Dental Squadron
Major Hunsinger obtained his BSN from Southeastern Massachusetts University (predecessor to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth) North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. A MSN with specialization in nursing education was awarded from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Research interests include the integration of simulation modules into nursing curriculum to solve present day problems with the shortage of clinical sites to maintain “hands-on” experience for nursing students. He is an advocate for increasing the use of online as a hybrid in “brick and mortar” schools.
Professional memberships include the American Nurses’ Association where he was Vice President for District 32 in Florida and an active member ofthe Association for Practical Nurse Educators of Florida. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Nursing, Who’s Who in American Management, and the National Dean’s List.
