Being a Good Neighbor

Introduce Yourself

  • Take the initiative to reach out to your neighbors first.

  • Possible conversation starters:

    • Local parks, hiking/biking/running trails, etc.

    • Favorite local restaurants

    • Interesting seasonal “must-see” arts events, festivals, etc.

    • Nearby sites that are good for road tripping on a weekend

  • If your neighbors know your name, where you are from, some of your interests, and that you have a curiosity about the Delhi community and region, they are more likely to see you as more than “just another college student.”

Be Considerate

  • Pay attention to who they are. If they are retired, have a family with small children, practice different religious observances, etc., then their weekly routines may be different from yours (i.e. sleep and weekend schedules).
  • If you have guests over, consider your noise levels and ask them to be considerate of your neighbors as they come and go.
  • Know local laws and ordinances regarding noise, parking, and trash pickup.
  • Keep the exterior of your place looking good. If your neighbors see you caring for the property, they may feel more respect for you as a member of the neighborhood.
  • Handle problems politely. If you think your neighbors don’t like you or make unreasonable complaints, it may be a result of negative experiences with previous renters in your apartment. (A good reason reaching out first can make a big difference!)

Keep your Neighbors Informed

  • Let them know if you are planning to host a party. Provide them a number of a sober host they can call if it gets too loud.
  • Inform them when you’re going to be gone for breaks. If you’ve been a good neighbor, they may be willing to check in on your place and let you know about suspicious activity while you’re away.

Ordinances

  • Reasonable Noise & Nuisance Parties ($250)
  • No street parking between Dec 1-April 1
  • Littering even on rental property lawn ($250)
  • Lawn clear May-Oct & Snow required to clear sidewalk within 24 hrs of snowfall end
